Thoughts from the Uffizi Gallery

I’m not the most knowledgeable or biggest fan of Medieval or Renaissance Art, but it was cool to see some of the great pieces like Botticelli’s Birth of Venus. We used Rick Steves’s audio guide, which really helped put the pieces in context and give us a way to appreciate the museum (can you tell I’ve become a huge Rick Steves fan?).

It’s crazy to think that as a human species we made all these strides in Greco-Roman times, then basically forgot it all and back-tracked to square one, and then had to learn it all over during the Renaissance. In art, they had to relearn realism, perspective, foreshortening, etc.

Mostly though, I can’t get over how ugly all the baby Jesuses look in Medieval art. They all look like old men stuck in fat baby bodies, and the ugliest old men around to boot. Mary looks okay most of the time…had they just forgotten how to paint cute kids too?
