In the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the United States government has acknowledged significant advancements made by Ukrainian forces in the southern region. According to White House security spokesperson John Kirby, these gains were achieved in the past 72 hours in the vicinity south of Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, provided additional insights, stating that while Kyiv's forces are advancing, the battle remains arduous. It's important to note that Russia has asserted its capture of strategic elevated positions near the northeastern city of Kupiansk. However, these claims have not been independently verified. John Kirby pointed out that Kyiv had acknowledged the southern offensive, aimed at disrupting the Russian land corridor to Crimea, was progressing more slowly than initially anticipated. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Ukrainian forces have made inroads against the second line of Russian defenses. Earlier in the week, Ukraine's military reported the successful capture of the village of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region. In the northeastern theater, Russia has amassed forces with the goal of reclaiming territory previously liberated by Ukraine east of Kharkiv. In the southern front, it is believed that Russia has fortified its positions with an intricate network of trenches, tunnels, minefields, artillery emplacements, and anti-tank concrete barriers known as "dragon's teeth." Kyiv launched its counter-offensive after acquiring advanced weaponry from Western allies and forming assault battalions. However, progress has been gradual, prompting Kyiv to appeal to NATO countries for assistance, including tanks, de-mining equipment, and warplanes, with a notable emphasis on US-made F-16 fighter jets. Expressing frustration with critics of Ukraine's counter-offensive, Foreign Minister Kuleba urged them to visit Ukraine and attempt to liberate even a single square centimeter themselves. He made this statement during a meeting of EU foreign ministers held in Spain. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalated when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Russian forces had previously seized control of the Crimea peninsula and significant portions of Ukraine's Donbas region in 2014. In recent weeks, Ukraine initiated its own attacks on mainland Russia. Russian authorities reported the destruction of three Ukrainian drones that were allegedly targeting the bridge connecting Crimea to the Russian mainland during the early hours of Saturday morning. President Putin, in a speech marking the start of the school year, asserted that Russia's victory in World War Two demonstrated the nation's invincibility. He emphasized the importance of patriotism in schools, and this so-called "important conversations" initiative was introduced in Russian schools after the commencement of the full-scale Russian invasion. Furthermore, Russia's military announced that it had placed a new strategic nuclear missile system, named Sarmat, "on combat duty." These long-range missiles are equipped with multiple warheads, although independent confirmation of their deployment is pending.
