The best thing I can do is to teach my person in the next generation how to be a productive citizen. Since he was born, he has watched every SOTU, political debate, and convention, regardless of party. We google and fact check through out each event. Before he votes, he will know how to make up his mind once it’s his turn to go to the polls. The best thing I can do as a mother is give Hippo the tools to soar. He told me he wanted to really understand the constitution and history better. So I found these gems at @barnesandnoble just in time for a little winter break reading. I added the @petesouza book on @barackobama in there for inspiration! The cashier laughed and asked if I was raising a President. One year ago I let my little political junkie phone bank for @hillaryclinton . He kept asking and even though I was worried about how people would treat him on the other end of line, I still let him do it. Most people believe that I influence him politically, but if you ever met my stubborn, @georgewbush & @barackobama loving, fiscally conservative, super spiritual, pro civil liberties for all, @wolfblitzer idolizing, @senatorboxer pen pal having, sci-fi nerdy 8 year old, you would know I cannot sway his political or religious views. And I wouldn’t want to. We don’t always agree, but I respect the fact that he has opinions based on facts & information, not just off what his mom and dad tell him. Start your kids early in civic engagement, so that by the time they reach voting age, they have a sound understanding of how our government works.
