Although you dropped Sentai completely and lost interest, what you think of the latest news of Super Sentai possibly ending after 50 years?
Some people think it actually is ending while others think it is rebranding, what is your take on the matter?
I'll preface this by saying this is just my opinion and speculations.
I'm leaning toward the rebranding theory.
Toei may be gearing up to bring Super Sentai to the global stage, as the reception to Zeztz has convinced them that there is interest in their IP beyond Japan. But they're also not trying to step on the toes of the owners of their American counterparts, who may see it as a violation of past agreements about the material, especially since they'd be directly competing with Power Rangers now (if it still makes television shows, that is).
Similarly, Bandai JP still holds the license to make SS toys, but Hasbro owns the license for PR toys (and also owns the franchise as a whole). I doubt Hasbro would be pleased if Bandai Japan floods the market with SS goods that could be construed as PR goods... like, say memorial editions of changers and weapons from their past shows that got non-MMPR adaptations.
However, rebrand may be enough so that they don't get into legal trouble with Hasbro and co., even if it's just SS with a new logo.
Maybe they'll play it off as a brand new franchise, then eventually retroactively include SS as being part of its history. They've done it before- there was even a time when both Gorenger and JAKQ were not considered part of the franchise (like when Turboranger was celebrated as the 10th anniversary show, which is only true if you didn't count them).
Frankly, if they wanted to cancel Sentai and even Kamen Rider entirely they could've done it years ago and justified it with poor ratings and toy sales, but they haven't. Heck, they've tried cancelling both- the latter more than once- and they both came back stronger than ever, hitting milestones that most Western shows would only dream of.
I doubt they'd stop now, especially since they now know it's not just the Japanese fans who would throw a massive fit if they did cancel.
