Vicksburg. 1863. While Lee and Meade were jousting all over the Pennsylvania countryside, Grant was laying siege to Vicksburg, Mississippi. In May, Grant's Army of the Tennessee, drives Pemberton's Army of Mississippi into the fortress city of Vicksburg, after 2 attempts to breach the city, on May 25, Grant decides to lay siege to the city. After 40 days, on July 4th 1863, with supplies cut off and the city in desperation, Pemberton orders the surrender of the city. The surrender included nearly 30,000 troops and 172 cannons. The Fall of Vicksburg cut Arkansas, Texas and part of Louisiana off from the rest of the Confederacy, splitting them in two, and giving control of the Mississippi River to the Union. This along w Meade's victory at Gettysburg begins the turn of the tide of the War. Not long after, Grant is called to Washington by the President to take a new job, and his friend Sherman would begin the march east, towards a small town called Atlanta... Photo: "The Glorious Fourth" by Mort Künstler. Portrays Grant arriving at Old Landing to meet Admiral Porter, commander of the river fleet that bombarded Vicksburg throughout the siege. #UlyssesGrant #vicksburg #civilwar #mortkunstler #thegloriousforth https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfl2aT-uDPI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
