#1 Resident Playbook Essay: About Kim Sabi (opinions about my babie)
So an account on twitter replied to my jaeil and sabi tweet expressing their opinion, saying that their romance story overshadowed Sabi's character development, that the show mostly made Sabi's empathetic and caring side expressed for Jaeil instead of her co-workers and patients. When I agree that her characters writing has flaws, needs more work, and South Korea itself hasn't grasp the writing of a neurodivergence character -> making them "AI" "Robot" and "extremely genius character", I literally don't get how on earth Jaeil-Sabi's romance overshadowed Sabi's character development and Sabi is mostly only caring to Jaeil????
I mean did we forget her journey of learning social cues, understanding people's emotions, getting advices from Dowon and Prof Seo and eventually Prof Ryu, her being sick and seeing Namkyung and her mom's interaction from ep 1-8????? Like I rewatched all eps of Resident Playbook and Jaeil and Sabi was EXTREMELY subtle 😭 and ffs Sabi didn't even buy Jaeil what he wanted at the hospital cafe when he wanted extra food/drink bcs he saw Sabi buying more tea (for Namkyung's mom)????
Sabi's flaws and issues in this show is about her social and communication skills which is totally different than Jaeil, Namkyung, and Yiyoung. During their biggest "change" moments in ep 12, we can see Yiyoung and Namkyung doing something "grand" in operations and Jaeil got acknowledged from Prof Jo and will be writing research with him as the first author, academic achievement. These 3 moments feel so grand because it's about practical and academic achievements as a doctor, which Sabi most likely already master since episode 1, she has no problems in operation rooms and she has no problem in diagnosing her patients and giving the accurate treatment according to her damn book.
And okay let's shortly list Sabi's key moments from ep 1-12, these are all from my notes that I alr wrote everytime I rewatch:
1. Ep 1: Sabi is trying to get signatures for her patients to do operation, she only focused on herself and her own achievements, unable to understand the importance of considerate gestures like giving tissues and all because she didn't understand why it is necessary (she needs reasoning in every action) Dowon scolded her "do you need a textbook to understand that" (kinda yes, at least she needs someone to tell her because it's hard for her to understand), but at the end she knew she did wrong
2. Ep 2: Sabi's biggest struggle in apologising and understanding social cues really emphasized in this episode, this ep really shows her being neurodivergence coded, Prof Seo was the one who gave her advices and at the end she learned from her own patients, she smiled to the patient BECAUSE OF HER PATIENT.
3. Ep 3: really interesting of Sabi's development, even tho there is a bit of Jaeil giving her "advice" about facing the father of the patient, the advice didn't really do anything lol, mostly Sabi figured out everything herself, learned from Ep 1 and 2, and she checked on her patient with ZERO JUDGMENT (her patient is a pregnant college student), and at the end of the episode she JUDGED THE FATHER OF THE PATIENT for saying the baby that was born is going to drag her mother down (bcs the mother is still in uni). Sabi didn't understand why the father(grandfather) said that and the show left that part open ending, and I think it shows how Sabi's struggle in understanding social cues can have its pureness, aka she learned all babies are miracle, need to be grateful for, and that's what she understands.
4. Ep 4: really the most complicated episode, it needs its own essay, but the thing is Sabi in this ep is all about her and Yiyoung?? Jaeil aint do anything to them bro 😭 also what we need to highlight is Sabi understanding Yiyoung's fear and guilt when they were about to "research" the baby so Sabi paid respect to the baby who has passed away.
5. Ep 5: The start of Sabi learning from Dr. Ryu, she is slowly learning from his kindness towards his patients, one of the key moments is when Sabi realized, talking about personal stuffs with patients has a reasoning, it helps their health, makes them feel better -> eventually connect to ep 12, and many more of her and Prof Ryu in ep 5
6. Ep 6: Sabi and Namkyung. This ep meant to highlight Sabi's inflexibility and strictness, and her emphasizing how sometimes she literally CANNOT UNDERSTAND PEOPLE. and her very important convo with Dowon:
-Sabi still cannot excuse other people's behavior even tho she knows she cannot change them, she is honest
-Dowon is a people pleaser, he doesn't even tell Myeong Eunwon what she did is harming him and he was surprised when he heard Sabi's principle (eventually Dowon was defended by Yiyoung, so Yiyoung = Sabi in this ep and Jaeil = Dowon, you get me, but not directly, the show is showing their opposite attracts dynamic)
7. Ep 7: Doesn't really have Sabi's main arc bcs mostly about Yiyoung
8. Ep 8: I LOVE THIS EP even tho it's stereotypical to make a character like Sabi becoming sick, "so she can understand what her patients feel", but eventually Sabi keeps listening to Namkyung and her mom interaction when she was sick. Sabi and Jaeil is starting to be emphasized more in this episode but Sabi is caring towards Namkyung and her mom by herself and not with Jaeil's help or anything, Sabi watched and learned by herself.
9. Now Ep 9-11 Sabi-Jaeil's loveline is really emphasized and eventually until Ep 12, where Sabi learned both from Jaeil but mostly, Prof Ryu. But then again the ep where it is mostly about Jaeil taking care of Sabi is ep 10 and Sabi taking care of Jaeil is ep 11. The rest is well subtle 😭
I literally have more to say about Sabi, Sabi and Jaeil, and everything about Resident Playbook, this show has flaws yes but I'd rather have a kdrama with flawed main characters that are rarely written in tv shows esp korean ones with some mistakes in writing here and there but people still can understand them, than a kdrama with common type of characters and the writing is still bad you know. Like literally tell me another kdrama character like Sabi right now, esp female characters.
Ok see you in next essay
