Black Library - Dark Hunters Umbra Sumus by ukitakumuki
The streets are relatively empty other than the foot traffic of downtown workers and ogling tourists. The day is comfortable for their walk although they don’t make it to the other houses.
They enjoy the welcoming warmth of the sun. The sidewalks are kept near spotless, storefronts are pristine. Seemingly opposite from the burg they were in last. Palm trees line the main roads and the smell of salt water from the coast mingles with the fast food of the corner street vendors.
They make their way through the city without seeing a familiar face although they receive several glances themselves. It’s Starlight Shores, there are famous people everywhere for people to gawk at, perhaps they’re mistaken for someone else.
While grabbing an early dinner at the diner, they see a woman with a notepad and camera.
“Son of a bitch.” Drake grumbles. “We need to get back to the house before we draw more attention to ourselves. Eat.” Drake urges sharply.
“I’ve lost my appetite, let’s go.”
Long strides make quick work of their relaxed moods and the path through the park towards the house. The time spent trying to figure out who they are here. Drake has always sensed it before... known it immediately. Now there is nothing but murkiness about them.
He thinks to check his phone. “I don’t have any contact numbers on my cell phone. Do you?”
“No, nothing. Something in the back of my brain is trying to push through but I just can’t get it. The harder I try I only seem to be certain of the pain I caused us. Why do I remember that so vividly? I can forget so much from our past but I can’t forget what I did to you?” Kai hangs his head, his voice solemn.
Drake pulls him in wiping the tears from his cheeks. “Look at me, love. You did nothing wrong. Not then, not now, not ever.”

Their conversation continues, explosions interrupting every few minutes, some closer together than others. After a while The Ancient falls silent and another large explosion rocks the building they’re in.
"It's time I meet Yara."
His brows wing up. "As you are?"
She smiles, "No, she will not see me for who I am. Go see to her wellness. I will meet you there."

“You’re rested?”
“Well enough.” He dismisses her concern and directs himself to business. “Am I correct in assuming the Shadows have escaped?”
“They have and I need your assistance.”
The surprise in his voice is not hidden. “I cannot imagine The Ancient needing help.”
Another explosion, closer this time.
“Look what happens when fear overrides reason. This place was already in war when they came. All hope is lost now, I can do nothing.”
Moments pass and she sighs heavily, “Is there anyone who needs me? Anyone who prays to me anymore?”
Sybhas thinks immediately of Tsotinu. “You are needed and revered. What can I do to help, Mother?”

She views what is left of the refugee city, waiting to see what, if anything, else will appear in the cache area. Shadows are closer, pushing the timetable up for when the ragtag group will need to make the next jump. No matter, they are united now and this confrontation will finally turn back from chaos. Another explosion and smoke unfurls from the western district.

“Be mindful. We were told to care for the female properly. As I am unsure exactly what those needs might be, you are organic and I expect you would be better suited for those responsibilities.”
“She has tender flesh, easily torn.” A wide grin spreads across the face of his scaled partner.
“Are you being jovial or do you intend harm, Torbin? If this is an attempt at humor I do not understand. Please do not force me to report you for injuring our charge. I have become accustomed to your companionship and do not wish to be reassigned.”
“Bolts, where is your mute switch?”
“I believe that is a rhetorical question as you have asked repeatedly over the years and although I have answered completely in the past you continue to make the request, therefore I will not answer you again.”

“We are not permitted to give you that information.” The robot answers.
“What he means is we can’t tell you where he is, but we can tell you he’s safe. Although we expect no problems, it’s our job to watch over you.”
“Can you tell me why we were brought here? Where my son and his husband are? We have family on Terra, are they okay?”
“I don’t have that information.”
Yara wrings her hands for lack of anything to do with them. She should be alarmed at the presence of these two, that she’s not alarms her more. She chastises herself, the experiences she’s had with Sybhas have taught her to be open minded. She thinks back to her peaceful life on the world with Numengela and sighs. Worrying about Sybhas is useless, he will return when he is able.
“Then tell me who you are,” she asks.
“I am Torbin and this is Bolts.”
The robotic eyes widen towards Torbin and he makes a scornful tinny sound similar to a chittering that makes her think of an aggravated squirrel. She realizes it must be a throat clearing maneuver and stifles her grin. He then turns to Yara. “Please excuse his rudeness, I am Designated Protection Unit B01T5.”
She forces a smile. “I feel very well protected, thank you. But I am eager to have answers to my questions.”
“Master Sybhas will hopefully return soon. Do you have any needs? Hunger? Thirst?”
