HELICON GETS SPOOKY
‘Twas a dark and stormy night. Swarms of dead leaves scuttled across cold concrete and a woman’s faraway cackle echoed in the moonlight. Eerie green smoke swirled into tall columns. The earth rumbled. The ground cracked. And out from this madness: HELICON ASCENDED!!
In light of the our favorite holiday, we are sharing some photos of Helicon members’ Halloween costumes!

This @MichiganRoss graduate from India got a warm welcome from @umich students and faculty. #MGoGrad #mgoindia
Swedish and Indian researchers on a trip to the Himalayas of northeastern India noticed that brown birds that were believed to belong to the same species were actually singing different songs.
Those living in the forests or lowlands had a sweet, melodious song. But the ones in the rocky highlands above the treeline had a much harsher, scratchier melody.
The scientists wondered if the birds — known as the plain-backed thrush — were actually two different species. If this were the case, it would be an exciting discovery because only three new species of birds had been found in India since 1949.
The effort to solve the avian mystery eventually led the scientists — Per Alström and Shashank Dalvi — to the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, home to one of the largest collections of bird specimens in the U.S.

MaryAnn Wilkinson, UMMA’s Adjunct Curator of Modern Art, as well as a close friend of Tyree Guyton’s, gave a wonderful talk today as a part of the In Conversation Series, titled The Art of Tyree Guyton: From the Street to the Studio. Exploring Guyton’s exhibit at UMMA and narrating the last 30 years of his life for visitors, Wilkinson captured the spirit of his art and shared it with the museum visitors.
UMMA is also compiling footage from the live feed on The Holy Place, which just finished construction on site in Detroit. Keep an eye out for this video next week on Heidelberg Television, located in UMMA. Be sure to check out the finished piece down at The Heidelberg Project, as well as visit the exhibit in UMMA through January 3, 2016.
