Zul Hajj – Practices and Sunnah
Out of the sum of twelve, there are four main sacred months in Islam, Zul Qa’dah, Zul Hajj, Muharram and Rajab. As per Islamic beliefs the reward for any good deed done in this month is multiplied and so does the punishment for sins.
Muslims should indulge themselves in ibadah, especially during the first 10 days of Zul Hajj as it helps in attaining great rewards from Allah.
The importance of Zul Hajj in Islam can be signified by these words of the prophet of Allah, Muhammad (PBUH): “There is no virtuous deed carried out in any day of the year that can be equal to the reward of (that virtuous deed) carried out in these ten days of Zul Hijjah”. The Sahabah asked, “Not even Jihaad?” Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) replied, “Not even Jihaad, except for the one who endangers his life and wealth (in Jihad) and does not return with anything.”
This means that the Jihad conducted in the first 10 days of Zul Hajj is considered to be more virtuous than Jihad carried out at any other time of the year, apart from for that Jihadi who attains martyrdom.
Great rewards are reserved for the ones who fast during the first 10 days of Zul Hajj (excluding the 10th). The significance of fasting on the day of Arafat (9th Zul Hajj) can better be understood by the following hadith:

Just the thought of performing Hajj/ Umrah energizes the devotee, but one should bear in mind that performing Hajj/ Umrah is an arduous task. Many people wonder ‘What is the best age to perform Hajj/ Umrah’, the age at which an individual can make the most out of these spiritual journeys.
Many Ulema believe that it is better to perform Hajj and Umrah in young age. Youth? Juggling between responsibilities, overburdened with studies, carefree about finances, religious affairs… so not ‘their thing’, how could young age be the best age to perform Hajj/ Umrah? Life is Uncertain:
Many young individuals associate the performance of Hajj and Umrah with old people. They believe in enjoying their youth and plan to perform Hajj/ Umrah in their 50s. A person always plan ahead of time but the irony is that they don’t even know if they are going to survive the very next moment or not. So, if live is giving you chance to perform Hajj/ Umrah in your youth, do so. Let alone the question if young age is the best age to perform Hajj/Umrah or not, in some cases, youth might be THE ONLY age to do so. Think about it!
As said by Hazrat Umar (R.A) and quoted in Bukhari: “When evening comes, do not expect (to live till) morning, and when morning comes, do not expect (to live till) evening. Take from your health (a preparation) for your illness and from your life for your death.”
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has encouraged people to perform Hajj as soon as it is possible for them. Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam; hence it cannot be neglected, and should be the top priority for any Muslim. A young boy/ girl should grab the very first opportunity for Hajj and Umrah that comes their way.
As reported in Ibn Majah “Expedite the performance of Hajj. For nobody knows what may obstruct one.”

The Travel Requirements – Basic Considerations:
It is required to plan the trip through a Saudi government approved travel agent in the country in order to obtain entry, for accommodation, and for the arrangement of conveyance in Saudi Arabia, during the Hajj period.
One must ensure that they travel for Hajj with a permit (issued to them) and that they are taking the assistance of an approved travel agent. Failure to do so will result in immediate deportation from the country and a 10 year ban on visiting Saudi Arabia.
To facilitate Hajj for US Citizens, a list of approved travel agencies is made available on the website of Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia and the Saudi Hajj Ministry. To avoid any inconvenience at Saudi Immigration, carefully select the right agent and make sure which guarantees accommodation and transportation, in addition to providing an entry visa. The U.S. Embassy and the Consulates General in Jeddah and Dhahran are not capable to support in such situations.

Never Keep Your Watch With You:
The most important thing that you need to understand is that time stays irrelevant during Hajj. As, whatever task would usually take a few minutes to complete, will take hours or days during Hajj. Delays at the airport, during the bus travel are normal. Hence, you should leave your watch at home so that you don’t take notice of each and every detail and frustrate yourself unnecessarily. Accept and realize the fact that micro level time management during Hajj 2014 is not possible.
Never be accompanied by Unnecessary Electronic Devices:
Even on the spiritual journey of Hajj people fail to detach themselves from the world. There are many pilgrims who bring along electronic items to Mina for their entertainment. Everything else can wait. Hajj is your time to reflect and repent so make the most out of it. Consider yourself on being a spiritual and mental hiatus. So, cage all of your electronic devices at home. Cry, weep, beg for mercy and unload all the stress, anxiety, guilt, and / or any other negative emotion off yourself.

9th of Zul Hajj, 10 AH- The Last Sermon of Holy Prophet (PBUH):

On the 9th of Zul Hajj, 10 AH (9 March 632), Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) delivered his last holy sermon. The sermon was delivered at Mount Arafat (in the Uranah valley), during the Islamic pilgrimage of Hajj.
The holy books of Sunnah, namely, Sahi Bukhari, Sahi Muslim and Sunan Abu Dawood covered and quoted some of the lines from the last sermon of holy prophet (PBUH).
The sermon has a number of common exhortations for Muslims to practice Islam, follow Quran and the teachings that Muhammad (PBUH) had established through Sunnah.
Shared below is the last Sermon of the holy prophet (PBUH) (9th of Zul Hajj, 10 AH):
"All praise is due to Allah, so we praise Him, and seek His pardon and we turn to Him. We seek refuge with Allah from the evils of ourselves and from the evil consequences of our deeds. Whom Allah guides aright there is none to lead him astray; and there is none to guide him aright whom Allah leads astray. I bear witness that there is no God but Allah, the One, having no partner with Him. His is the sovereignty and to Him is due all praise. He grants life and causes death and is Powerful over everything. There is no God but Allah, the One; He fulfilled His promise and granted victory to His bondsman, and He alone routed the confederates (of the enemies of Islam).
O’ People! Listen to my words, for I do not know whether we shall ever meet again and perform Hajj after this year. O’ Ye people! Allah says, O’ people We created you from one male and one female and made you into tribes and nations, so as to be known to one another. Verily in the sight of Allah, the most honoured amongst you is the one who is most God-fearing. There is no superiority for an Arab over a non-Arab and for a non-Arab over an Arab, nor for the white over the black nor for the black over the white except in God-consciousness.
All mankind is the progeny of Adam and Adam was fashioned out of clay. Behold; every claim of privilage whether that of blood or property, is under my heels except that of the custody of the Ka’bah and supplying of water to the pilgrims, O’ people of Quraish, don’t appear (on the Day of Judgement) with the burden of this world around your necks, whereas other people may appear (before the Lord) with the rewards of the hereafter. In that case I shall avail you naught against Allah.
Behold! All practice of the days of ignorance is now under my feet. The blood revenges of the days of ignorance are remitted. The first claim on blood I abolish is that of Ibn Rabiah bin Harith who was nursed in the tribe of Sa’ad and whom the Hudhayls killed. All interest and usurious dues accruing from the times of ignorance stand wiped out. And the first amount of interest that I remit is that which Abbas ibn Abd-al Muttalib had to receive. Verily it is remitted entirely.

Supplications during Hajj (Dua)
Allah, the most glorious, orders His followers to supplicate to Him alone and promises to answer their supplications. Holy Scriptures and texts signify the importance and value of making Dua in Islam. Dua is said to be the essence of worship, the heart of Ibadah. It shields the believer against all the evils and serves as the biggest support during pain and sufferings.
Dua helps the believers to find peace. It opens up the hearts and relieves them from stress and anxiety. It is the only refuge for the helpless, subjugated and powerless people. Undoubtedly, the most unfortunate of all are the ones who are unable to beseech Allah in supplication.
Supplications during Hajj are more likely to be answered as the virtue of supplications become much greater during the holy pilgrimages and the supplication of the righteous travelers are always answered.
Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“Three supplications are definitely answered, and there is no doubt about them: that of a father, that of a traveler and that of one who has been wronged.” [Abu Daawood and others]
The importance of making supplications during Hajj can be gauges by the following Hadith. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“The delegation [guests] of Allah The Exalted are three: one who is performing Jihaad [i.e. fighting in the cause of Allah], one who is performing ‘Umrah [lesser pilgrimage], and one who is performing Hajj; He called upon them and they responded, and they ask Him and He gives them.”[Ibn Maajah]
