Representing Georgetown Law at UNA-USA Member’s Day

On Friday February 17th 2017, team members of the United Nations Association – Georgetown Law (UNAGL) had the opportunity to actively take part in UNA-USA Members’ Day and visit the UN headquarters in NYC. All throughout the day, we had the privilege of sitting down in the General Assembly, connecting with delegations of other UN associations from all over the country and discussing the role of the United States within the organization with high-level UN officials and ambassadors, as well as reflecting on the current trends that will shape the UN and its mission throughout the following years such as sustainable development, displacement, conflict prevention, and the role of youth.

In addition to the main program, we were able to schedule several separate meetings for our delegation only which gave us the opportunity to sit down with high-level UN officials in engaging Q&A sessions, and get to know a variety of departments within the UN, including the Rule of Law Unit, the Office of Legal Affairs, the Political Affairs Unit, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Public Information. Their testimony provided us with true insight regarding the reality of working within the organization and was a great chance to gain first-hand advice for students considering similar career paths. We were able to discuss the crucial role of international law in all aspects of the diverse work of the UN. Furthermore, meeting with the Youth Program Officer of and Peace & Disarmament Officer of WFUNA (World Federation of United Nations Association) convinced us of the impact that UN affiliated youth programs can carry and incentivized us all to further our mission here at Georgetown Law.

What a remarkable opportunity it was to hang out in the UN General Assembly Hall all day today! Even got a pic at the podium where heads of state and global leaders have stood and addressed the whole world! I'm still shook about that honestly...
