I know you may never see this but my good friend Drew Pescaro (and childhood best friend of my significant other) was one of those shot by the monster at UNCC. He was taken to the ICU immediately and had emergency surgery to remove the bullets that entered his back. Hes currently recovering there and has a long road ahead of him. On Tuesday, a 22-year-old former UNCC student opened fire on campus with a legally purchased handgun, killing two students and wounding four more.

According to Gun Violence Archive, the shooting at UNCC is the 104th mass shooting this year in the U.S., and according to an NBC News tracker, it is the third school shooting in 2019. But from the time of the shooting on April 30 through May 3, cable news spent less than 43 minutes covering the tragedy—and the Sunday shows did not mention the news at all. News outlets can and must do better.

I am a student at UNCC. I am still at a loss for words for what happened yesterday. My heart hurts for my fellow classmates and their families. If anyone in the Charlotte area would like to come to the vigil it’s today (May 1st) at 6pm at the SAC on the UNCC campus.

Yesterday’s vigil at UNCC to honor the lives lost and those who were injured in this horrible mass shooting. This is my home. It hurts so much. This was my first year here. I had a class with one of the victims this semester. It’s all too surreal for me to take in. My friends were stuck in the bathroom crying while one of my friends boyfriends was running for his life right outside of Kennedy. I was fortunate enough to have walked home 30 minutes before this took place. RIP to Riley Howell and Ellis Parlier. 😔💚

At first I posted that I was in disbelief and saddened, I edited my post. Disbelief is not quite the right word...these insane violent shootings are so commonplace now. How many lives must be lost and how many years must pass before our government tightens the gun laws? UNCC, where I both learned and taught...my heart goes out to everyone affected.
