Black Panther Review.
“Ryan Coogler's masterful superhero drama is unlike any other, featuring outstanding acting, breathtaking art direction, fascinating royal intrigue, memorable action sequences, and surprising depth.”
Black Panther is just off a masterpiece for me, mainly due to the predictability, however that alone in no way detracts from the pure awe and satisfaction I got from the film, almost definitely being the best Marvel Superhero film and completely being my favorite Marvel Superhero film, for a variety of reasons.
The Villain ‘Killmonger’ played by Michael B. Jordan, is my favorite character purely, because of his devotion to his role and how smart he was in creating his character looking to source material of Magneto from X-Men, who at his base has similar theories of how to correct the world, by world domination to eventually end all suffering, pain and malice initially created by the long-lasting suppression of races across the globe throughout history at the hands of governments, oppressors and ‘Superior’ civilizations. This is further understood and actually empathized with, meaning that by the end of the film you have no true ill-will towards Killmonger, because he’s a villain that at his heart is doing something for the betterment of mankind, which many strong leaders, have strived for although going about it in different means e.g. Martin Luther King Jr, and Malcolm X, which people may not agree with, but can’t fully disagree with the overall mentality.
I love the characters of Shuri and Black Panther equally, as the siblings are both a wonder for the masses, however some scenario’s throughout the film (though minor) did piss me off, because they were fairly annoying, such as the mentality of W’Kabi, which at the end did leave me bitter towards the character and his portrayal, which knocks it down from complete masterpiece throne. However, certain characters that are humoring and interesting such as, Everett Ross, M’Baku (quite unnecessarily untitled Man-Ape) and Okoye, which actually enlightened the film overall and made it even better for the humour aspect, that in some ways is paramount to Marvel films!
The quote above fully encapsulates the feeling and actions of the film and I would go on to say the film through representing African culture and ways of life, so effectively shows how nature can positively affect a film in various ways from lore and costume design to the setting and story. And while, some argue Black Panther isn’t an important monument for the progression of Black People in important roles, I believe it is a monument just becuase of how it presents black characters enriched by their nature, culture and capabilities, allowing them to be on par and above characters already established and are notable and regarded, as important or worth something. (the end there goes a bit wobbly, but I think you can understand)
I didn’t particularly like Nakia, as a character I found her pointless, useless in a fight and also, where’s Storm? C’mon!
The Hell is this? Anyway i got some kind words from someone on Instagram and she helped me motivate myself to get this out :D
