And something I really love about your blog: YOU. You are the best thing about your blog. I've always said you're like a little ball of sunshine with all your loveliness. You're one of the nicest people on here and I love you. DON'T HIDE FROM ME EVER. AND MY NOT SO BEAUTIFUL FACE MISSES YOU RIGHT BACK.
This is just a short story I promised Beth that I'd post for her. It's kinda old but features around one of my old characters Max who is a werewolf.
Prompt: If I had the power to change something I would change….
If I had the power to change something I would change that night 23 years ago. I wouldn’t have gone out so late. I would do anything to change that night. But it was too late, the times have passed. I couldn’t change that night for anything and now I had to keep going for my pack.
“So, what’s something you regret?” She asked. I looked over at the golden haired girl sitting next to me. Her name was Rae. I knew already it wasn’t her actual name but it was the name that she had introduced herself to me and that’s how everyone knew her. Her hair wasn’t naturally gold, instead she had bleached it from what I was guessing her dark brown. But since she must have dyed her hair before it had turned that color. It looked nice on her to say in the least. Her eyes where a chocolate brown color. It fit for her really. Licking my lips I looked away.
“Max?” She asked.
“It’s not something you’d like to hear,” I stated as I ran my hand though my hair.
“Why not?” Rae questioned.
“It’s kind of a monstrous thing,” I told her with a sigh. “Now we should get you back to the Guardian’s house. Night hates it when the neutrals are out late.” She frowned a bit but got up and started to walk towards her car.
“What about Lilly?” she asked.
“What about her?” I said.
“Well will she be okay here?” She asked. I nodded and ushered her to her car. Watching her drive away with a false smile and a wave I waited until she was out of sight before I let my expression drop. I couldn’t tell her the horrible thing I had allowed to happen all those years ago. The one thing that I would change.
“You know she’ll find out at one point. It’d be better to tell her now rather than later,” My brother said as he walked up behind me. “And we’d rather have another guardian on our side rather than those rodents.”
“I know. But I’m not about to tell her,” I stated as I walked back to my house.
“Oh great Alpha, bestow upon us your wisdom and greatness,” he mocked. I looked back towards him and my eyes flashed bright green before I walked inside and slammed the door shut.
That night I had a nightmare. That night ran through my head, shredding me of my Alpha status. In the reliving of the nightmare I was walking down the street. There was a girl who was running ahead of me. Since it was almost the night that all wolves changed I could smell her perfectly. But what I smelt on her was fear and blood. My eyes turned bright green as I burst into a run towards the girl. I wasn’t even sure why I was running but when I finally caught up to her a Blonde male had his arms wrapped around her, his neck burying into her neck.
“Help please!” She begged. I just stood there and watched as he drank her blood, knowing full well he was a vampire. I stood there until she no longer struggled and he dropped her lifeless body to the ground.
“Why did you not help her pup?” he demanded, his crimson eyes looking me over.
“I don’t know,” I said weakly. He laughed a bit and grinned widely.
“Well then. I guess that this girl will start to haunt you. You still having your humanity left in you,” he said as he started to stroll away. I could have taken him, fought him to save the girl, but I hadn’t. I let him kill her.
Waking in cold sweat I looked around for a moment. I pushed my fingers though my short hair and let out a low growl of frustration. The vampire I had met all those years ago had been Lance Chiroptera. Now he was the leader of the vampire gang the Bats. I doubt he took notice that I was the wolf who had allowed him to kill that girl. But even now I doubted that he would even care. But I had made it my job to protect the new comers before they could choose a side, save people from him to make up for that night.
“Alpha?” A voice asked. I looked up to see Ransom Siren standing in my doorway. I motioned for him to come in and he went and sat on the edge of my bed, pushing his bangs out of his face. He was a turned wolf, his family having been attacked. He and his brother had survived with scratches and bites. Only his brother hadn’t survived the change and he had so he was alone. Half his head shaven then grown shorter than the other side. The other side was slightly longer, long enough to give him bangs. What was interesting about him was when he had been changed his eyes developed a crimson ring around the pupils, leaving the rest their sky blue color.
“I have to tell you something,” he started quietly.
“Speak Ransom,” I ordered.
“I’m leaving,” He stated. “With Lance.” It took a few moments for the words to sink into my skin before I looked at him with a demanding look. He was leaving? With Lance? I would not allow it to happen.
“No.” I stated angrily. “You may leave but not with him.”
“You have no choice. It’s mine. I’m going to find the one who turned me and I’m going to kill him. Lance is going to help me,” He stated. I stood up imminently and growled, my canines showing to him.
“Why him? You could take anyone else but him? That vampire bastard is the one you want to take?” I bellowed. “Why?! He’s a monster and he’d kill you first chance he can!”
“No he won’t! He wouldn’t kill me ever! And you want to know why? Because he and I have been seeing each other behind everyone’s backs for the past two years. He’s going with me because he wants me to be safe and I want him to go with me,” he yelled back as he stood up. I backed up and stared at him. I knew that he was gay, hell Darren was sure of it after all the advances he made at him and how he took it. But Lance? Lance fucking Chiroptera was gay and dating a werewolf in my pack. It explained so much with Ransom, the nights he’d sneak off or days he wanted to be alone. He was with Lance all those times. Part of me wanted to kill him right there but I backed away from him.
“You betrayed our pack for a relationship with him? With the enemy?” I demanded.
“I didn’t even want to choose a side but you all made me! And he and I never talk about the sides; we’re too focused on us,” He said.
“Traitor,” was all I said. Almost instantly there were two of the warrior wolves there, grabbing his arms.
“Put him in the dungeon. He’s betrayed us,” I ordered as I turned away from them.
“All because of whom I’ve been with? I don’t see you going after your brother who’s killed more of your pack members than the Bats,” he yelled as he was dragged away. I said nothing, just stared at the wall as they dragged him away. I didn’t even want to think about what he said because I was so angry right now. Lance had an insider and it was one of the people who no one would have ever suspected. He was smart but this was not going to happen. Ransom would be put to death for what he’s done, that was the way of the pack.
I spent the next few days out of school, getting things ready for Ransom’s trail and death. No one came to see me in that time, I hardly even saw my own pack members. I had been putting things in arrangement when Rae came into my house. Looking up she instantly attacked me, a knife in hand. Since no one was around it was only the two of us. She had me pinned and her face showed she was angry.
“You heartless bastard! You’re worst than anyone else for what you’re going to do!” She screamed. I looked up at her as she held the knife to my throat.
“It has to be done,” was all I said. She punched me and I slowly looked back at her.
“No! You’re being heartless towards him! Did you even hear him out?! DID YOU EVEN LISTEN TO HIM?! You didn’t! He’s done nothing you claim he has done! You haven’t seen them together! The way they act and how you can tell that Lance doesn’t care for him being a werewolf or even in your pack. All he cares about is Ran and you are going to kill Ran because you hate Lance! How is that fair to Ran when he has done nothing?” She yelled. I growled and threw her off me.
“Of course I didn’t hear him out. All he said was he and Lance had been together and I knew he had betrayed us,” I yelled.
“He never has! He is loyal to the Wolves; he wouldn’t have invested himself so much into the relationship if it was only about bringing you guys down. You are heartless!” Rae yelled at me. “I can’t believe you! I thought that you were different than the rest of them! But you’ve proven me that you are just like the rest of those bastards.”
“What are you going to do about it then?” I demanded.
“As a guardian I am taking Ransom Siren into my care. He will no longer be one of you Wolves. Instead he will return to being a neutral and he will not choose a side,” she said after a long painful silence.
“You can’t just take him,” I started but she cut me off.
“Yes I can. I found that out just recently. I can remove anyone from the Wolves, the Bats, and the Vipers and put them into my care. I am also taking Lilly. Both of them will no longer have anything to do with you,” she said.
“Not Lilly!” I exclaimed as my eyes widened.
“Sucks don’t it? Punishing you for a relationship with my best friend because you punished Ran for his,” she asked. “And she doesn’t even want to see you after this. You fucked up big time.”
“Rae, Ran needs your help; he’s rather messed up,” Lilly said as she entered. Her dark brown hair with purple bangs and a shadow box covering her eyes. She didn’t look in my direction but I could see a glimpse of her wolf. It looked ready to attack, anger steaming off of it. I really had messed up.
“Alright. Get yours and his things. We’ll be leaving now,” Rae said calmly. Lilly left and Rae glared at me darkly. The power of a guardian radiating off of her.
“Don’t come near them. Anyone in your pack either. Especially your brother. Darren comes near Ran I will kill him,” She ordered before she walked out. Leaving my house I stood there and watched as Lilly packed her and Ransom’s thing into Rae and hers cars. Then Rae carrying Ransom to her car. He did looked beat up, worst than what I was expecting him to look like. I couldn’t stand it anymore. I went to go towards them but something exploded before me, causing me to stop. I looked towards Rae to see her standing with her hands out stretched. I remained where I was even after her and Lilly drove away. There was no way that I could just allow this to happen but I did. I let them leave and I just watched them. I went to school the next day, hoping to see Lilly to talk to her. Only she hadn’t come to school, neither had Rae. Night wouldn’t tell me anything and said that they were dealing with things.
The day was long, tedious even. I only wanted to talk to Lilly but the more I called the less likely she was to talk to me. She did text me telling me to fuck off but that was it. She wanted nothing to do with me. As I turned the hall corner I met a fist. The fist belonged to none other than Lance. His fangs were fully extended and he looked ready to murder someone. I slowly picked myself off the ground only for him to kick me back down to the ground.
“You nearly killed him!” He roared in anger. “You nearly killed my Ran!” I clutched my stomach and slowly picked myself back up.
“He betrayed us,” I growled. Another fist to the face, this time drawing blood. Lance picked me off the ground and slammed me into the wall.
“He never said one word about your pack secrets. He never would even if I asked him too. You are punishing him for the mistake you made years ago and you can’t forgive yourself. So instead of facing me head on you went after the thing I care about,” He snapped, his fangs threatening to rip into me. My eyes widened at how he remembered that night. Remembered me from 23 years ago.
“That girl you let me kill; she helped murder a family 182 years before. She deserved for me to kill her. Your wolf knew that too. It sensed her crime; it was why you didn’t stop me. But if you think I’m going to let you get away with almost killing my boyfriend you are just about to be proven wrong pup,” he said. He was about to take a bite out of my neck when someone tapped his arm. Ransom stood behind him and the black eye he had made his eyes look brighter.
“Don’t Lan, if you kill him then his brother will just take over,” he said. Lance looked at me then at him before dropping me. He bit his wrist and held it out for him but he shook his head.
“I don’t want to. I will heal okay?” he said. Lance nodded then kissed the top of his head. The gesture in itself was a sweet one but seeing Lance do it to Ransom it seemed to have a different meaning. Ransom closed his eyes and leaned against him gently.
“You really didn’t tell him anything?” I asked softly.
“I wouldn’t have done that. Lance doesn’t even care about the pack and he knows that I wouldn’t spill any secrets,” Ransom said as he opened his eyes. Looking him over more closely, he seemed beaten up pretty badly. Not only did he have a black eye but his lip was busted as well. They must have rubbed nightshade on themselves before they beat him up to keep him from healing properly. Nightshade was such an ugly thing really.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered. Lance growled and Ransom took his hand in his own.
“Sorry doesn’t make up for what happened to me. Nor does it make up for the lies you already told. I could allow Lance to kill you but I rather you have to suffer for what you’ve done as well as Lilly being angry with you. It’s only fair,” Ransom said harshly.
“You never told me….” I started.
“He didn’t want you to know and I didn’t exactly want you to either. Knowing I had a weakness means you or your brother would have exploited it. Hell your brother probably would have damaged him more than he already is. And we’ve spoken to Night, once we get back from killing his maker he’s going to become a vampire and join the Bats,” Lance stated flatly. “His first kill will be Darren.” My head snapped up at my brother’s name. I growled darkly and Ransom stepped between us.
“Don’t or I’ll kill you…. Good-bye,” he stated as he started to drag Lance away. I stood there watching them. I couldn’t allow Ransom to kill Darren but now I had no choice. He wasn’t of my pack anymore and he was going to be a vampire. Things were going to go wrong so easily.
