Underrated Shows #2 ☠️Mutant League☠️
Awhile back in the 90′s, Electronic Arts made a series based on an also old game Monster Football League. The show as the title suggests is called Mutant League.
Not many people know the show and it never really got online so it was lost to the ages. I stumbled upon it and let me tell you it’s AMAZING! Here are some reasons why aswell as why you should watch it:
☠️ It’s a great show for sports lovers. They have football, hockey, wrestling and even monster trucks! Anyone into sports will love the show. They even had their own fictional commercials and ads, one of them being a shoe brand for a rival SPIKEYS.
☠️ Also a great show for people into sci-fi and slimy. It’s set in a bit of a futuristic timeline with science, hover cars, cameras etc. It’s also not for those with a weak stomach. It has its gross and scary stuff such as mutants, flying heads, torn limbs. It’s a bit violent but I wouldn’t say it’s too much. Anyone into or can handle that would love it.
☠️ Character and story writing. For a 90′s show, the writing isn’t too bad. The characters are realistic and relatable. You’re able to understand their motives and they have quirks and flaws to relate to. And the story has plenty of action and things to look forward too. It’s not perfect but I like to think it has good depth, especially for a 90′s cartoon.
☠️ Variety. The show has a lot of things, action, humour, romance and even angst. It’s written with a lot of effort. Not to mention they have the characters do different sports, had a Christmas special and even a hall of fame episode going back on clips of past episodes and the character’s adventures.
☠️ The show goes into deep and serious issues such as racism, sexism in the sports world, stalkers, practicing dangerous behaviours, drug addiction, corporate corruption/greed and so much more. And to me it never comes off preachy but realistic and on point. They even had an episode where a character (not Bones) was sick and spread the disease to his team, showing the dangers of not telling people you’re sick and going to public things, risking making others sick too. Very relevant for today.
☠️ The main character, Bones Justice. He’s undoubtedly the good guy but at the same time not flawless and doesn’t always knows what’s right. He can let his pride and anger get the better of him, he can make bad calls and mistakes, he himself learns lessons and grows. Like the rest of the cast he’s a realistic and relatable person. He’s really fleshed out, especially for a skeleton.
☠️ Sometimes men cry and it’s treated as ok. More than once a male character might get really emotional and even tear up but it’s not treated as weakness but with seriousness, to show someone is going through something rough. For a 90′s cartoon or any cartoon to show that is really impressive.
☠️ It’s a 90′s cartoon about mutants but it’s not a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ripoff. They use the idea of mutation but it has its own origin, effects and the story has it’s own originality and independence. The 90′s was notorious for reusing popular show ideas, especially TMNT. But Mutant League didn’t do that or atleast I don’t think they did.
☠️ It had a good finale. Very emotional and connected a lot of things together, with some great twists. Also leaves some mystery and suspense too.
Overall I think it’s a good show that deserves more attention. I think it could even be a good reboot in the right hands. Also anyone interested in what #1 of underrated shows was here’s a link. https://dnpanimationstudioclone.tumblr.com/post/657746124947554304/underrated-shows1-rimba-racer
Anyone interested it’s on the CTV App. Best of all it’s free, though u might have to watch some short ads. If u can’t find it you may have to look for another online service. Some also can be found on Dailymotion. Here’s a link to the first ep, warning it’s not in the best quality.
