Making A Living In The Berlin House and Techno Scenes
The definition of underground music or underground artists is blurred these days, in order to help cement their position in the music industry. When speakers are sold on the shelves of stores across the nation, there is clever wordplay that is used to convince a buyer that he or she is getting something that is better than the rest. Words like “studio monitor” or “reference speaker” may be used to attract buyers – when the truth is that they are getting nothing more than a typical bookshelf speaker. Artists use the same technique to space themselves apart from the rest. They might refer to themselves and original or even underground to promote their eccentricity and defiance from the norm. Ironically, once these groups become popular they are no longer considered underground. To be part of the underground means that you are never above the radar. Underground acts perform at shows that are not advertised commercially, and these same groups will never become a household name selling millions of songs – but this is what they are after. And then the joyous journey of friendship when the two of you figure out how to make things work in the long run. Finally, the memories of how it all began.
