Underground World
1906: The Earth (is) Not Hollow.
Pics:
1. Portrait of Baron Ludvig Holberg, who made Nordic literature relevant to modern audiences.
2 & 3. Holberg's shiny new statue & how it's 'aged.' Ugh!
4. The original map to Holberg's Inner Earth. Sorry, couldn't find a proper English version... A little Help?
5 & 6. Covers to his novel, "... World Underground."
7 thru 9. Interior art from his novel. I miss such 'care' being shown to our modern novels - we're lucky if we get a map!!
1906: The Earth (is) Not Hollow.
Luvwig Holberg was a writer, essayist, philosopher, historian & playwright. He lived in Bergen, Norway - until 1722, when that city burned down!!
Holberg enriched Nordic literature with ideas from other European nations. Around 1919, he started writing funny works that attacked intolerance & other human foibles.
Holberg showed great sympathy for the lot of women of his day & worked to pass social reforms.
He also wrote comedic plays - until another 1729 fire burned down the only theater in Copenhagen!
From then on, Holberg turned to writing satirical novels...
And, "A Journey to the World Underground" was 'born.' This story is a blend of SciFi, fantasy & used the Lost Race trope.
Plot: A poor Norwegian student plunges thru a bottomless hole that lands him in an exotic civilization full of fabulous creatures - all on the under side of Earth's crust!
Our hero makes it to Nazar, a 'planet' orbiting a miniature sun!! Thruout the adventure, he meets intelligent trees, fashion conscious apes(!), warring avian nations & other wonders...
All thruout the story, the hero is forced to face his own temptations.
This was the 1st fictional novel set underground & was very favorably compared to "Gulliver's Travels!"
Holberg's tale was finally adapted, as a full length Danish TV movie in 1984.
Critics say "World Underground" is about an utopian society, as seen by an outsider. Holberg pokes 'fun' at morality, science, sexual equality, religion, earthly governments & philosophy.
Our hero is actually appalled that men & women can work the same jobs together! He's then exiled for trying to change this state of affairs!!
After some 'years' of adventures, the hero becomes Emperor of Quama, where creatures 'resemble' human beings.
Exiled again (for 'tyranny' this time), our hero falls thru another hole - that takes him back home, to Bergen...
PS: In 1747, Luvwig Holberg was elevated to the status of baron. But, his original name was actually Nicolas von Klimius...
