Do you get along with your wife?
‘Quite well, all things considered.’
‘It was understandably tense at first, though can’t really blame either of us for that.’

‘The Emperor set us up may he rest in pieces...’
‘Congratulations to him for making me more leery of sudden job promotions.’
100-Prompt Challenge - Alternates - 009 Poor
Maybe she thinks he can’t hear her. No. She’s far too intelligent for that. She knows he can hear her. It’s why she speaks to that thing with a mock fondness.
Is he hearing it through his ears or the golem’s, he wonders. Are these thoughts even passing through his own body’s head or its.
“Poor boy. You showed such promise in the beginning. It’s too bad you were so disobedient.”
He’s reminded now that she knows more than he thought. That sidewise glare in his body’s direction. He knows these are the eyes of the Warrior; he can see himself not too far away, set on the Emperor’s throne as a joke to her. Taunting him as he watches himself fall farther and farther into a natural decay over the weeks. He’s still smart enough to comprehend that even if the body moves after her against some better will.
I didn’t want this. I don’t want to be this weapon, I wanted it at my side! I can’t...
I can’t leave yet!
She knows. Knows what he’s trying so hard to stay for, why he hasn’t succumbed to blind following. Why his iron will stays. She was there, after all. Knows the story, the history.
She knows.
Oh, why must he be so stupid as to step into this mess! Why must he be so cruel, not to himself, but to those he cares for! Is this an empty promise he’s made?
He hears her snide remark again and again, like a broken record.
“Poor boy.”
He hears it through ears that are not his, sees it through eyes that are not his. Hears the spit in her voice before the flash.
Even after all is said and done, after he snaps back awake with no remembrance, resting as though he has slept for weeks on that confounded throne. He remembers enough, throwing off the headpiece and watching it break apart, its role spent. His head hurts, but he still remembers.
Remembers the subtle insults, the stabbing pokes.
Poor boy, poor boy...
Yup, another one that had me stumped and is now rewritten. Have some minor Holt-y angst. You know I love them when I torture them. it builds character
