Toro Y Moi's career could have been another case of a musician whose name becomes too attached to a scene, yet Mr. Bundick escaped this. Then again, I feel he sort of knew about the problem early on as you can hear on Underneath The Pine, the follow-up to his debut. That disc could be seen as his response to being lumped into the idiom many weren't sure how to understand. While you could fit this into whatever chillwave represented, the haziness of the digital psychedelia remains potent on the platter, he goes beyond the cliches of such an enterprise. Thus, the sounds on Underneath The Pine take their influences from all over the place, showing Toro Y Moi's eclecticism, which made him the Pearl Jam of chillwave, if you catch my drift.
