How I Learned to Understand the Bible
Do you want to understand the Bible but feel as though you are reading a foreign language? You are not alone. In this personal and encouraging episode of Daily Bread, The Mandated Reporter shares how she went from being completely Biblically illiterate and unable to understand the King James Version to reading, understanding, and teaching Scripture through the help of Holy Spirit. There was a time when she watched other people read the Bible with ease while she struggled to understand the words on the page. Instead of giving up, she found a Bible she could understand, continued reading, completed devotionals, answered comprehension questions, and kept growing one step at a time. Then she was asked to teach children’s ministry—even though she felt completely unqualified. With no formal Bible-study method and no confidence in her ability, she prayed and asked Holy Spirit to teach her everything she needed to know. What followed was spiritual, on-the-job training. Holy Spirit gave her Scriptures, led her through the Bible, connected the lessons, and taught her how to explain the Word to children. That same dependence upon Holy Spirit later helped her write books, create lessons, teach others, and establish an online private school. This testimony is especially for beginners, parents, new Bible readers, and anyone who has ever said: “I do not understand the Bible.” “The words feel foreign to me.” “I do not know where to begin.” “I am not qualified to teach my family.” “Everyone else seems to understand Scripture except me.” There is no shame in beginning with a Bible translation or study resource that you can understand. Keep reading. Keep asking questions. Keep seeking wisdom. Most importantly, ask Holy Spirit—the Counselor and Teacher—to help you understand what you are reading. You may not know how to do everything, but you can learn how to ask for help.
