The matinee of Midsummer had been a disaster, and Eleanor was in a foul mood. Matthew Livingston, who was playing Oberon, had forgotten his lines multiple times because he was a walking mistake. He had gotten drunk before the performance. No one cared how handsome you were if you couldn’t remember your lines. He had even gotten booed by the crowd, which was supremely embarrassing. He deserved it.
After the play, refreshments were being served for some of the higher class members of society. Normally Eleanor liked mingling, but she didn’t want to deal with all the laughter and teasing about the performance. It was Matthew’s mistake, but they would all pay for it.
Luckily, a familiar face came into view. Eleanor headed her way and sidled up alongside Lady Vaughan. “I didn’t know you came to matinees. I thought you preferred the evening shows.” The evening show would probably be much better today...
