13 Years Later
In January 1999, UNECO, along with members of UNECO-sponsored ECO-KIDS, started Na Mahina Ai (Our Farm Harvest), the first community garden in North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Thanks to the generosity of local macadamia nut farmer Jim Trump and the community outreach skills of UNECO Director Ed Mura, the 6-acre parcel off Ho'ea Road was offered to the community to use for one year. Land was newly tilled and water free. UNECO provided organic starter seeds, tools, and educational resources.
Opening day found the garden full of excited residents, eager to begin. For some it was the first garden they’d planted. For others, it was an opportunity to expand their home plots and grow more produce to feed their families. For a few it was an opportunity to sell what they grew wholesale. UNECO'S goal was to introduce citizens to the idea of assuming increasing responsibility for their personal food needs. After all, Hawaii at that time and to this day still imports 90% of its food.
After months of cultivation and care, the rich soil at Na Mahina Ai produced an abundance of vegetables: sweet potatoes, green onions, taro, and greens of all kinds. At harvest time, garden crops were even delivered fresh to table!
In December 2011, we returned to North Kohala to find out how community farming had progressed since those days. Although presently there is no full-scale operating community garden, a Saturday Farmers Market is on Hawi’s weekly agenda and is well supported by the community. Sage Farms, whose budding farmer Ben Nicholson taught ECO-KIDS 13 years ago about planting essentials, has expanded and now sells a variety of organic produce and honey in Big Island grocery stores. A former ECO-KID is studying environmental science at University of Hawaii, Manoa, while other ECO-KIDS have made the environment a key life concern. As part of the elementary public school curriculum in North Kohala, children are building a closer connection to the land by learning how to plant taro, sweet potatoes, and other island crops in school gardens.
There’s currently a new challenge in place on the Big Island called Eat Locally Grown. It started three years ago with a handful of people pledging to eat only locally grown food for one week in the year. Last year (2011), participants increased by 300% and expanded their commitment the entire month of September!
Community Harvest Hawaii, a project of North Kohala Resource Center founded in 2002, encourages residents to harvest and drop off extra fruits and vegetables from their yard (citrus, avocados, guava, breadfruit, lilikoi, banana - anything!), ask for assistance in harvesting their trees, help prepare food and learn new food preparation skills, teach others their expertise, share a community meal/meet new people, and help distribute food in the community. CHH is committed to improving North Kohala’s food security while simultaneously supporting economic development. In order to directly address food security, the North Kohala community has set a goal to provide 50% of its own food by 2018.
We were very pleased to see that organic farming, self-sustainability, and improved nutritional education are issues residents of North Kohala take evermore to heart.

"Slogans, chants and comments by Occupy Wall Street protestors calling for an end to corporate rule and demanding more equitable public spending and opportunities for the majority (the 99%) are familiar to those heard throughout Venezuela in the 1990s, when privatization overtook the oil-wealthy nation, multinationals ruled and the people were relegated to shantytowns."
