I am afraid that human activity might be killing many marine species in the ocean before we even have the chance to discover them. “As of the year 2000, The National Oceaning and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) estimated that as much as 95% of the world’s oceans and 99% of the ocean floor are unexplored” (Mustain 2001). The oceans contain pretty much the only areas on Earth that have yet to be discovered and explored, and that is saying a lot as water covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface. The ocean is so deep in some places that no human or machine at this time can safely explore its contents and life. A standard recreational scuba diver can only dive to about 100 feet deep, depending on the certification, while the ocean gets up to about THIRTY SIX THOUSAND FEET DEEP (Geology.com) while the average depth of the ocean is 13,120 feet deep (Mustain 2001). I think it is exciting that there is so much unknown about our oceans and what I believe are the Earth’s greatest resources.
