“ Oye! ”
A shabby looking man with a mop of blonde hair stood on a street corner in Diagon Alley, shouting at anyone who passed within earshot. He wore a tired white T-shirt that hung poorly over his guant frame. His jeans were torn and muddy. The only part of him that didn’t seem coated in a thin layer of dust was his eyes. They seemed to glint, unnnaturally dewey and wide. Observation might tell you that they were bright with passion! Toxicology, however, would argue that the man was just incredibly high.
On the ground by his feet were stacks and stacks of newspapers. Judging by the ink stains that mottled his arms, they were freshly printed. He held a copy between his outstretched arms, brandishing it in the face of each passerby. The headline read “INVASIVE DOXY SUB-SPECIES THREATENS LOCAL ECOSYSTEMS” in heavy font.
“You there!” The man shouted suddenly. “Please, you need to read this.” He thrust a copy of the paper, titled The Quibbler , at the stranger. “Don’t you hear them screaming in the night? England’s Doxy populations are in grave danger, and their numbers are dropping by the minute!” He looked up imploringly into the other’s face, and licked a fleck of spittle from his upper lip. “Please. The Paper. Just one Knut, if you will.”
Xenophilius had been at this street corner going on three hours now. The collection tin by his feet was empty.
