I went up to Edinburgh last weekend, on the epic wind rattled train journey, curled up, restless and sleepy in the corner of the wide-windowed train, reading The Mill on the Floss. Being distracted by starbursts of gorse on the rambling hills. I stayed in those awkward anonymous communal rooms. I couldn't sleep as the window next to the bunk above me was open onto the road. Eventually, at one in the morning I feverishly crept my hand up the clattering blinds and woke the woman above me like in a horror film; I apologised profusely. I went to the university and talked to people, was the sole plant scientist and was given a personal tour of new greenhouses. I would be somewhat glad to go there, it might be better, even, if needs must. Walking the streets of Edinburgh is like walking the midline of a steep sided valley of tall stone buildings. And then a real rock looms up, gorse strewn, the city's omniscient wild king. I went back to the train station over the North Bridge, a place that sums up the incongruity of the city. There you can stand waiting for a bus on a bridge over a train station in a capital city and look across to the Firth of Forth and only air could separate your naked eyeball from a wild dolphin.
ahhh ur girl has an interview at cambridge!!!
i just got an unconditional from ucl!!
After dragging myself around the wilderness at the end of sixth form and in the Year of the Gap, I have managed to get something offer shaped to study Biological Sciences at Oxford! Its an open offer, so I won't know until August where I could end up. I am very glad that the second time seemed to work. I need to tweak my grades a little to meet the requirements, but missing the grades last time seemed to be a freak accident. I just needed to learn how to communicate properly, which in my case needed the additional year. Hopefully it will give me renewed focus for the rest of The Gap, but still no guarantee of actually getting there, but!
