10. How do you spend your free time?Writing letters, reading and knitting or embroidery!
19. Can science explain everything, eventually?Hm, everything is a big word so I don’t think it can explain everything, but I do think it can explain nearly everything, or at least a whole lot. (still have to get more into this topic though)
32. What’s the first thing you notice about someone?Either their shoes or their hands as I never look straight at peoples faces when first meeting them.

The gorgeous Julia (unicornsareblue) tagged me in her 20 questions x
1. What fictional character do you think you're most like? I don't really know myself! One of my closest friends once said I was like Amelie Poulain, which was a huge compliment (as you can see by how it stuck with me). I don't know which characters I'm like myself, but fictional characters whom I consider role models would be the Hon. Phryne Fisher, Amelie of course, many film noir femmes fatales (for their cleverness, strenth, and dangerous sensuality), Lemony Snicket and all of the Baudelaires, Audrey Horne, Jane and Elizabeth Bennet (all of the Bennets, really), Princess Ann from Roman Holiday, Jane Eyre, and many more but I would say that this answer is far too long already... You get the idea!
2. Do you have any scars? Or freckles? I have a scar on my lip from when my father accidentally stabbed me with a sharpened pencil when I was a baby... the dangers of having an artist as a father! As for freckles, I have a few moles: one on my left hand (I use it to tell my left hand from my right even now), a birthmark on my upper thigh, and a mole on my check which I've always been a little proud of because it's kind of like the glamorous beauty mark women used to draw on their faces... or at least I like to think so...
3. What's your favourite drink? Strong tea with milk, iced water, grapefruit juice (I haven't made much of a foray into the world of cocktails yet)
4. What's your favourite animal? Thanks to a childhood of zoological obsession and hero-worshipping David Attenborough I have to say I love all animals. I did always have a soft spot for whales, dolphins, members of the cat family and small mammals and birds
5. What makes you cry? Many, many things. Usually it's beauty. When something is absolutely too beautiful (and I find that happens a lot) I get teary. It's silly.
6. What's your favourite weather? When it's crisp and cold, with a wind that bites at you even in wool, but when it's still sunny, with an icy, impossibly high sky and jagged clouds racing past. Blues seem bluer, greens greener, beds cosier, books more beautiful. At night it would storm. Romance weather.
7. How do you think others would describe you? Is this any different from how you see yourself? Honestly, I think it depends on the person! I really have no idea how other people see me. I guess the best I can do is respect myself and treat others with the same respect. Sometimes it's hard on both parts, but it's the right way to be. I've always had the unshakeable feeling, though, that I never act the way I really am, or the way I am to other people doesn't really reflect how I think I really am. But then I don't know how to act like I really am... it's confusing, and I try not to think too much of it. I just try to be the best I can be, to others and myself.
8. Where would you like to travel? Everywhere. Absolutely everywhere. Twice. Even the places I've already been to. Right now I have a real desire to go back to Spain. I lived in Barcelona for a time when I was 14, I would absolutely love to go back there again, live it all over.
9. Do you have any special traditions in your family? I can't think of anything big... just little things, really. We always spend lots of time together. I'm not sure if that counts as a tradition, though! We always eat dinner together, but that's not really unique to us or special! Just whatever we do, if we can, we do it together. We're just really close, the four of us!
10. What are you looking forward to? University is a big, strange, exciting question mark. A little closer to home: next week I am going upstate to visit family. I will be there to help my cousin get ready for her end-of-school formal with my grandmother and a family friend and champagne. It will be a week of catching up, salty water, books, recuperation. I'm going to start writing again, it's been far too long.
11. What's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to you? My parents, especially my mother, have said so many absolutely gorgeous things to me, it would be hard to choose (not to say my father isn't nice to me or anything! He says it without words). Apart from that... years ago someone once said that they liked that I was different and stand up for what I believe in. And a teacher once told me I was deeply empathetic. I just hope I am!
12. Do you enjoy warm weather or cold weather more? Why? I always immediately say cold weather, although there's something about a long warm sweet summer day that gets a deep hold on me. I love the warm weather, but there is something about the colder weather that I just adore. When the summer begins to fade and the coolness begins to creep in around April/May, I just feel so alive and romantic and at peace.
13. What are you afraid of? Losing the people I love, or never finding them. I just want the people I love to be around forever. I'd rather hurt than them. Also millipedes. I hyperventilate and start crying just thinking about them oh my god never talk about millipedes around me I'll cry and faint
14. What are you wearing right now? Winter pyjamas because it's unseasonably cold and also 11:30 at night!
15. What's a weird habit of yours? I really like listening to music but I need to be moving when I'm listening. So if I want to listen to my ipod I have to go for a walk, and if I can't be bothered going out I just walk around my pool while listening to music. Around and around and around. I don't know why! It lets me think!
16. Do you have a fictional character that you love and would defend no matter what? Just look above at my fictional role models! Also all the characters in The English Patient. They're flawed but I love them.
17. How do you laugh? Are you someone who giggles or laughs out loud? I love this question! I usually giggle really, but if I'm taken by suprise by something funny I'll laugh loudly :)
18. Do you know how to play any instruments? No. When I was younger I used to learn how to play the piano, but I was terrible at it and my teacher didn't like me because I was terrible and because she didn't like me I absolutely hated it. Also I have no rhythm at all. When I was a lot younger I used to learn guitar, too! Only for a short time, though
19. Which movie have you seen the most? Like the one you know all the lines to. Amelie! It's ridiculous. I just watch it all the time. I put it on in the background when I'm doing something else. I know it backwards. Also my dad, brother, and I watch Pulp Fiction pretty often, too. That's just a movie you can watch over and over again
20. Is the town where you live well-known for anything? Apart from being the biggest coal port in the southern hemisphere (or at least it was last time I heard), which isn't so good, it was ranked in the Lonely Planet's Top 10 Best Places to Live :)
This was so much fun! I'm sorry it took me so long to answer! So, do I tag some other blogs to answer these questions now? Thank you so much for tagging me; I really enjoyed it!
Oh, happy birthday Merel! <3 I wish you all the best, you beautiful little human being.
aw thank you very much! ❤
Julia's tag questions
1. What fictional character do you think that you are most like? Oh goodness, I have no idea. If anyone else wants to answer this about me: feel free!
2. Do you have any scars? Or freckles? Yes, both. 3. What’s your favourite drink? Green tea. 4. What’s your favourite animal? My cat, Mickey. 5. What makes you cry? Other people's sadness; stress; the truth; the general inability to fix things. 6. What’s your favourite weather? Slightly cold and misty, sprinkled with a lazy, golden, autumnal sunshine. 7. How do you think others would describe you? Is this any different from how you see yourself? I know that others think I'm "smart" and "good in English", but I don't know if that is what they say behind my back. This is very different from how I see myself. I hardly think of myself as a person; I only think of myself as "me". And that "me" has feelings and worries and ideas that no one but my mind knows about. So, yes, of course others describe me differently than I would. 8. Where would you like to travel? The UK, Paris, Rome, Prague... 9. Do you have any special traditions in your family? Not really. My family is a bit shattered. And old, now I think of it. My youngest cousin is four years older than I am. 10. What are you looking forward to? The future, but I depend on the future too much. 11. What’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you? (The best compliment). It kind of depends on the person. If a stranger tells me I have nice hair (which has happened), I would perceive that as nicer than when a friend would tell me I have nice hair. I know that my friends must think I'm nice, so having friends is a great compliment. Also: "That seemed incredibly poetic and I have nothing to say back to it." This person is an absolute gentleman; everything he says is a compliment. 12. Do you enjoy cold weather or warm weather more? And why? COLD! I love autumn and winter, I love sweaters, I love tea, I love Christmas, I love knitwear, I love scarves, I love putting on lots of clothes. 13. What are you afraid of? What aren't I afraid of? 14. What are you wearing right now? A shirt that I have worn in 20 degree weather as well as -6 degree weather (Celsius), a green sweater, black jeans and grey shoes that have seen more of the world than my other shoes. 15. What’s a weird habit of yours? Weird is a difficult term, but I suppose some can say it is weird that I never put my hair up when I go to school. I put it in the messiest of buns as soon as I get home though. 16. Do you have a fictional character that you love, and that you always would defend no matter what? Not really. There are many fictional characters whom I wouldn't defend when it comes down to it, because I know I would lose that battle. 17. How do you laugh? Are you someone who giggles or laugh out loud? I laugh out loud and I'm always the one who can't keep a straight face. 18. Do you know how to play any instruments? Yes! I know how to play the violin, which I enjoy a lot. Besides that I am passionate about piano, but I cannot play well at all. I can't get my mind around the part where you are able to play two different rhythms at once. That should be impossible for everyone instead of just me. 19. Which movie have you seen the most? Like the one you know all the lines to. Probably Pride & Prejudice. 20. Is the town where you live well-known for anything? I would not call it "well-known", but we have some special events that sometimes end up in the news.
