Inside Vietnam’s Most Charming Café Covered in Sticky Notes
Guide for Opening Your Own Unique Cafe | Hugecount
You have finally decided to venture out – you are going to open a cafe in Sydney! As exciting as that may be, you still need to have every step carefully planned. Otherwise, your business will fail in a couple of months. So, don’t rush the plan and check out this guide.
1. Location really does matter
Before you start looking at specific places to rent, take a look at different areas of the town. Identify how many people walk through the area and how much parking space is available in the vicinity. You also need to make sure that the location you’re interested in is visible to people on the street and that sufficient amount of people walk by on a daily basis. Also, make sure there aren’t too many cafes in the neighborhood – you don’t need a lot of competition. Lastly, you should like the area you’re considering because you’ll be spending a lot of time there.
2. Do thorough research on the business
As you will be making a big investment, you better learn a lot about what it’s like to have your own cafe. To run this business successfully, try to get advice from those who have been doing it for a long time. Let them tell you what works in a cafe and what doesn’t. Get ideas and valuable lessons by visiting other cafes in the town. Identify what you like about them and what you would definitely do differently. Lastly, think about the customer base. Who are the majority of people who will be visiting it? It will largely affect the menu, the prices, the ambiance, etc.
3. Designing the layout
When it comes to the layout of your cafe, you will have to make a layout for both the front and the back area. It will affect the customer’s comfort but also the efficiency of the service. So, it’s important to make several steps when it comes to designing the layout.
First step – designing the front-of-house layout
The first thing to decide on is the atmosphere you want to create. Is your priority your customers’ privacy or want an open and friendly setting? If the majority of your customers will be business people working at your cafe or even hold meetings, it’s clear the layout must provide them tucked-in space and a lot of privacy. On the other hand, if you’re aiming at an airy setting that will also have an outside area, then you should also consider adding commercial shade structures Sydney companies have to offer to allow your customers to sit in the open.
When it comes to colors and the style of the furniture, be aware of the fact that they will also affect the customer’s impression of the cafe. Intimate setting demands darker colors while an inviting atmosphere is best created through light and bright colors. Depending on whether you’re going for a rustic style or a contemporary one, your furnishing will have to reflect it.
The back-of-the-house layout
When designing this part of the cafe, it’s necessary to consider the service as efficient as possible. It means thinking carefully about how orders will be taken, the type of stations, where the orders will be prepared and served. Lastly, you also need to designate space for storage and food equipment.
4. Write a business plan
This process will help you understand the market in your town and the amount of money you’ll have to invest. A good business plan will be your guide through different stages of development and management of the cafe. It needs to include the summary on what your cafe stands for, the analysis of the local market (customers and competitors), the staff (you and the additional help), marketing strategy, and, finally, the necessary budget and ways to get a hold of that amount of money.
5. Find the right suppliers
Make a list of products and items you’ll need for your cafe (beverages, dishes, napkins, etc.) and do research on the suppliers in the town. Don’t be lazy – make a thorough comparison of all of them in terms of prices, offer, and quality. In time, you’ll pinpoint the ones that suit your budget and your philosophy.
Final comment
If you follow this guide, you will definitely create a stable foundation for a successful cafe. Invest yourself in it – after all, it’s your business.

A Cozy Café with The Unique Dishes – La Tartine
A Cozy Café with The Unique Dishes – La Tartine
In Sanur area, Hotel Puri Tempo Doeloe has a unique ambiance to share. Not only the hotel, but the café also offers a colorful interpretation of a charming traditional Indonesian village, artfully blending modern and traditional elements. It is a delightful space with the colonial-styled tea house, mismatched table setting, and cheerful decoration. The café is a good spot to enjoy your full meal or a simply indulge in a coffee and a sumptuous homemade cake.
La Tartine is a quaint café located at the front of the hotel and serves an all-day menu or healthy cuisine. The food menu you can try; The Tartines, The Burgers, The Salad, What’s with The French?, The Dessert, and The Snack.
Erik The Red becomes a signature tartine. It’s a salmon sandwich with a twist. It consists of smoked salmons, sour crème, topped with capers, spritz of lime juice, over crunchy toasted focaccia, or rye bread. Erik The Red served with side or fresh garden salad and honey mustard dressing. You can enjoy it with an ice lemon tea, perfect!
For dessert, you might try Unicorn Poop which is a thick chocolate cake with double chocolate chip covered in layer and layers of melted chocolate and hint of orange zest. The Orange Pie is other signature dessert at La Tartine. The smells ad sweet as its taste. The presentation looks like a sunrise because the philosophy inside is to brighten your day and make you smile. Bon Appetite!

Café con Piernas
I’d been in Chile for three weeks and have been thoroughly disappointed by their absolute lack of coffee culture. Sure, coffee places abound, but for some ungodly reason they all serve instant coffee…well not all. Some cafés have actual coffee and much, much more.
Chileans traditionally prefer tea over coffee, so some years ago some ingenious chap began looking around for a way to improve coffee sales. What he ended up creating was a truly Chilean phenomenon: the café con piernas, or coffee with legs. Its basically a type of café where you get your coffee served to you by a scantily clad woman. The kicker is that the coffee is real and less expensive than at the rare restaurant with an espresso machine.
These cafés were brought to my attention during a walking tour of Santiago and I immediately made up my mind to make my own café tour the next day. Hence it was that I found myself wondering the streets of Santiago on a fine Tuesday afternoon with a good friend from Colombia (a girl who I’d met last year while in Bogota) in search of cafés.
I’ll tell you the truth, it was awkward as hell going into the first café. I mean, I’ve been to a strip club before, but it was at night and I was drunk. This was the middle of the day with no beer in sight. We stepped through the black door (all windows were covered) and were confronted with a small room taken up by circular bar with a dance floor in the middle. There were six girls in florescent bikinis and one male customer who was getting a lap dance in the corner. Everyone inside seemed a bit taken aback to see a gringo and a woman (I think the woman part was the real attention getter) enter the shop. We took a coffee and passed some small talk with one of the girls who was thoroughly enthralled with my blue eyes (naturally) and then went out in search of another café.
The previous day, we had seen into a café where the women wore tiny skirts instead of bikinis. As that style of outfit is substantially sexier than the bikini, we attempted to retrace our step in search of that particular café. Unfortunately, after more than an hour of searching (asking random pedestrians to see if they knew where the café was), and having a couple doors closed in our faces, we gave up and settled on a standard café for another drink.
This time my friend, who is a professional journalist, pretended to be interested in working as a café girl in order to pump our waitress for information. We learned a lot. The city has hundreds of these cafes, with hundreds more spread around the country. Typically, they are open from 8AM until 8PM (though they don’t fill up until around 6PM) and only serve coffee. No food, no alcohol. A coffee generally costs 1000 pesos (a bit over 2 USD), but for an additional 2000 pesos (4 USD) you can buy one of the girls a drink (for which they keep a portion of the sale). In exchange they will, at a minimum, sit and talk with you. Frequently though, it will also include lap dances and significant touching. On an average 6 hour shift, the women can expect to net about 20000 pesos (40 USD) in drink wages and tips. From time to time, and entirely at the discretion of the girls, a ‘date’ can be arranged outside of the café. Our waitress told us that while they let my friend enter, they typically ban ‘couples’ because they are frequently on the lookout for threesome. I guess that’s why some doors got closed on us.
It’s a common misconception by those who are not ‘in the know’ that these are just places to take a coffee. Obviously, they are a bit seedier. At any rate, by this time I was buzzing from coffee so it was time to bring the tour to an end.
