Final Major Project Brief #2 (July 2013)
How can the linguistic patterns distinct to African American English (AAE) be expressed typographically?
African American English (AAE) - also known as African American Vernacular English (AAVE), Black English or Ebonics - is the distinct variety of American English that is primarily spoken by African Americans. I have previously referred to it as AAVE, but have transitioned to AAE for simplification.
This rich, unique manner of speaking has been largely criticized and stigmatized because of its separation from the more accepted mainstream form of American English. Speakers of AAE span all social classes, with most not speaking it exclusively, but rather switching between the dialect and standard forms depending on the situation. But critics do not take details such as this into consideration when they villainize the speech itself and its speakers. Often, they simply brand speakers with labels such as inarticulate and ignorant without having any comprehension of the many factors that influence the departure from the English they may be used to hearing.
The critique of AAE has routinely been muddled with the larger issue of racial prejudice, a long simmering problem within the United States. This vicious cycle is further perpetuated by the fact that members of the Black community also sometimes criticize those within their culture who don’t successfully switch to polished English in public spaces, ‘[They are] expected to be representing the black community. And speaking ‘proper’ English is bound up with black respectability.’ (Young, 2013)
