What is a Unit Publicist?
Unit publicists generate press and direct the branding for film and television projects. In addition to working with studios, cast and crew (+ their various PR teams) to plan press activities around the release date, unit publicists are often on set during principle photography to produce media and marketing materials (still photography, BTS footage, etc.)
Unit publicists are members of the International Cinematographers Guild, a division of IATSE not currently on strike, but likely to be greatly effected by SAG-AFTRA joining the WGA on the picket lines, as virtually all union productions will be forced to stop production.
Not attacking anyone I am actually curious Where is the line between PR relationship and a conspiracy that they are being forced into one?
Fair question! In my opinion it's words like "coercion" or "forced".
I'm sure the decision making process is routinely compromised by unfathomable pressures that come with fame and multi-million dollar contracts. But when it comes to PR, particularly outbound content that requires the client's participation: clients have to consent! We work for them, not the other way around.
Unit publicists and studio marketing teams build narratives with less input from the talent, but those tend to be short term and don’t require participation outside of standard project obligations. (Ooh they were flirting during that interview is about as deep as it gets.)
So, main point: clients can tell their PR team no. 🐴
(Psssst, it might just be me for the next few days while Sunny is doing some adulting, so please be patient!)
There are so many fall releases I’m sad to be missing press for. But it sounds like unit publicists start work during filming, would that include interviews?
Yes, at least one round of sit-down interviews used to be standard for DVD content but is still relatively common in the steaming era.
Often done between shots or during the filming of a significant scene, actors are still in costume and usually reflecting on the character and production. I expect upcoming releases will be relying pretty heavily on this type of content ! Unit publicists also take a lot of still photography during filming which can be published during the strike. 🌞
Hey guys! Who usually negotiates magazine covers/profile stories of stars of upcoming movies? Is the studio/streamer or the star's own PR team? Maybe a combo of both? Also, how do they decide which outlet to go with?
Who usually negotiates magazine covers/profile stories of stars of upcoming movies? Most often a star's personal team, within the promotional timeframe of their latest project. Unit publicists (who work on film/television productions) also work with outlets to promote the project as a whole, which can feature individual celebs.
Also, how do they decide which outlet to go with? Who is the target audience? Who have we worked before that we trust? Who has availability and is likely to respond to our pitch and respect our ideas? (Third Q is most important) 🌞
Re: ICG Publicists Awards
This is one Hollywood award ceremony where commercially successfully film and television thrive!! None of that artsy fartsy shit, audiences have to watch to win! (Which means it’s the giant studio publicity departments that usually clean up. 😏)🐴
