Request for information about emergency travel document requirements for deportation
I am currently trying to investigate the Nigerian High Commission’s practice of issuing emergency travel documents. The Unity Centre has already written substantially on this from experiences of supporting people who have been forcibly removed from the UK to Nigeria, regardless of not meeting the Nigerian High Commission’s requirements for issuing emergency travel documents (ETDs).
A number of people that I have spoken to who were forcibly removed from the UK to Nigeria also claim that they were deported without ever meeting the Nigerian High Commission or issuance of ETDs. Would someone be able to tell me if ETDs are required in every instance for an individual to be forcibly removed or deported lawfully? I know cases where people haven't been able to be deported because the receiving country won't issue ETDs, but I just want to check if it would be unlawful to remove someone without the issuance of ETDs by the receiving country's High Commission?
A recent Freedom Of Information request showed that the Nigerian High Commission charge GBP 70 per forced removal/deportation, so that’s a tidy sum of money they get from charter flights every two months.
It would be great to share knowledge and experiences, and work to expose the corrupt and profit-motivated practices of the Nigerian High Commission. If anyone has represented or supported anyone in situations like I have described, and wants to share their knowledge/experiences, please get in touch with Lotte at The Unity Centre via email.
