A pet peeve of mine is when writing advice or writers in general try to gear everything toward a “universal audience.”
So few people seem to understand that there’s literally no such thing! In high school, we’re taught to define our audience first in our papers, so why are people not able to do the same thing for creative writing?
It is absolutely impossible to please everybody, and the sooner you decide who you want to write for, the easier it becomes to hone your writing in that direction. Those people will make it very clear what they want to see!
Don’t seek out writing advice by someone who primarily reads/writes romance if you’re wanting to write action/adventure. Don’t try to make your writing exactly like [insert author] if that author’s audience isn’t who you want to read your stuff!
Doing everything you can to write for as many different types of people as possible is just going to water down the story you want to write and ultimately exclude a lot more people than you’re including.
Define your audience, define your goals, and write with that in mind!
