Welcome back to our ‘Humans of FYA’ series, which documents the ordinary and extraordinary stories, thoughts and feels of the wonderful humans we encounter every day.

Today, Matt

Matt Hsu, 28. Trumpeter for The Mouldy Lovers

“We're a pretty fun, party band that people get up and dance to, but we have quite a political angle as well. We're on tour at the moment promoting our new single 'Six Foot Fences’, which is about gentrification.

We've aimed to make all our gigs about something political. We were just at Wollongong at a gig against coal seam gas mining... yesterday we were in Sydney, at an event called Rock'n For Refuge which was about helping new refugees get settled in Australia... So yeah, we're just spreading good music and good knowledge around the east coast.

... you don't have to seek out the top most, hardest to get into political arena—just form little community events and just talk to people...introduce someone to someone else who might, for example, be a refugee, just so they can put a face to an issue.”

Ror Akot - 2014 Made in Vic Award Winner

Ror moved with his sisters, younger brothers and mother from Sudan when he was 9, through refugee camps and to Australia. He started writing poetry and rapping when he was 12, and uses his words and messages to talk about hard issues. Ror's not afraid to use hip hop to talk about the death of his father, racism, war, religion, drug use, violence against women and mental health issues. Ror is seen as a rock star amongst the African community in Fitzroy, and he takes it seriously - he doesn't drink or smoke, and he is the voice of all the issues this community of young people is facing. In fact, Ror is so inspiring that a documentary has been made about him (titled Ror), which played at the 2014 Melbourne International Film Festival.

About the Made in Vic Award: Someone Doing Something Awesome, in Victoria

This year, FYA held the Unleashed Awards in Melbourne. In honour of the awards being held in Victoria, the Victorian Government and FYA want to give a shout out to a young Victorian. A born and/or bred, go-getting, community-changing Victorian. Sure, they may not have ‘CEO’ or ‘Captain’ in their title, but you still look up to them. Because you’ve seen them lead, from up close or afar. A glorious, victorious, Victorian.
