The Unlovables- I’ve Cried 4 You
Mikey Erg playing guitar for (and fitting like a glove into) The Dopamines on "Public Domain"
I highly doubt that anybody (even Yannich himself) has ever made a comprehensive list of bands that Mikey Erg has played in or at least contributed his talents. When anybody even asks him to even recount the number of band's he is currently in, he gets annoyed because not even he can account for all of them. And no, I'm not going to attempt to coddle that official list together here, even if it would give me the chance to throw in plugs for the Dopamines, the Unlovables, Dirt Bike Annie, The Slow Death, For Science, Psyched to Die, Used Kids, House Boat, The Measure (SA), Star-Fucking Hipsters, or (most recently) the Pale Angels. Conservatively, that would probably cover 1/4 of them. Joey Erg wasn't lying when he called Mikey the "man of 1000 bands." (Seriously, though, this is hilarious).
One of my lasting memories of Mikey Erg actually had nothing to do with him even performing. In January of 2011, DC's Max Levine Ensemble threw a massive tenth-anniversary party for themselves at the Black Cat, bringing along Bomb the Music Industry!, Delay, and Good Luck. I brought my soon-to-be-girlfriend there on our second date. We showed up around showtime and walked into the Red Room bar downstairs. The first person I spotted was Mikey Erg, standing next to the bar talking with a few pop-punk luminaries I vaguely recognized. I wish I had gone over and introduced myself, but I didn't want to ditch a girl right at the beginning of our date. Yannich was the only one of the three I'd never had a conversation with over the course of all the times I saw them play, but his good reputation had always preceded him. Seeing him making the trek down to DC for his friends' anniversary show was not at all surprising, considering that, despite being a consummate punk musician and the bellwether of the pop-punk scene, one could tell that perhaps he even outdid those traits with his pure devotion and fandom.
As the writer of most of the best-known Ergs! songs, Yannich still routinely performs them live, usually solo (acoustic or electric). Yeah it's been a little while, but why deny the people what they want?
