Of Legions - Black Valleys

Of Legions are a local Stoke-on-Trent band who consist of Luke Mansfield, Dom Hitchener, Sam Morrey, Alex Dodd, Xanda Rorbach and Connor Wells.

Black Valleys opens with an immense sound, a simple distorted guitar riff and very technical drumming. While the rhythm may not seem much through the track it fits great throughout. The vocals are rather deep growls, however fit with the theme the band are looking for within the track. Theres a nice variety of depths throughout the track, although some areas do seem to repetitive.

Overall the track was alright, not really for me but you can see why they have become popular. Technically there are really good element within the track and it could be interesting to see what else they can create. Be sure to check out Of Legions when they support Continents on the 25th March in Stafford.

Everything on Red - Satelllites

Everything On Red are a 3 piece band from Stoke-On-Trent, while their latest release is an album called Satellites.

The album itself is flawless, well constructed and all in all extremely well written. Throughout the album there is a nice variety of tempo and some excellent guitar riffs and drum fills. The vocals themselves are rather unique. Personally I like the tracks “A Line in the Sand”, “Tooth and Nail” and “You Play the Cards That You Are Dealt”. For me these are the standout tracks on the album, and will almost certainly be making its way onto my iPod somewhere.

I am definitely impressed with this album and how flawless it is. The recordings are superb and definitely require recognition. The unique blend of the vocals, with the guitar riffs and drum fills make the album different to other Pop Punky albums you get now a days.

Junction 16  - Too Late

Junction 16 are a 5 piece local band consisting of Livie McIntyre, Nathan Cooper, Liam Sproston, Jack Simpson and Nathan McCue. They have performed many gigs over the short time they have been together and collecting a large fan base through this time.

“Too Late” starts with a very darkish rhythmic strumming of a guitar,before becoming very upbeat, the guitar, the drums everything really reminds me of a Hey Monday track.  They vocals are superb and lyrically the song is very catchy “Too late, too late to apologise”, this easily got stuck in my head after a couple of listens. This song has enough of everything, simple yet very effective.

I really like this track, for a young band to create a track so professionally isn’t something you normally come across. To see Junction 16 live you will need to make your way to the Sugarmill on Monday 23rd December.

Inscriptions - Open Your Eyes

Inscriptions are a 5 piece local band; consisting of Steve Clowes, Kane Holmes, Corey Hewitt, Tyler Dutton-Green and Andy Johnson.

Open Your Eyes is one of two releases the band currently has. The guitar within has some nice little riffs, kinda catchy in some respects. The drums add depth, adds a nice rhythm throughout the whole track, while the vocals may be somewhat different they are still effective and are not out of place. Even the stripped down and slower section of this song is very well constructed.

It’s definately worth a listen if you like something heavier than normal radio rock tracks. This bands next gig is at The Sugarmill on the 28th December so be sure to check these guys out then.

HeadrusH - I Won’t Lay Down and Die

HeadrusH are a local 4 piece band, consisting of Andy Law, Dan “Oggy” Ogden, Tabbie and Tom Bevan. They have had huge amounts of success since forming in 2003, including performing alongside Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden and many other artists. Along with performing at multiple festivals including Bloodstock, the band have also toured Germany. With tracks being aired on multiple radio shows worldwide and features in Classic Rock and Metal Hammer magazines, this band doesn't seem to be doing much wrong. The single “I Won’t Lay Down and Die” also appears with the bonus track “The Seventh Sense”.

I Won’t Lay Down and Die, opens very with a very eerie, whispered start before a very distinct guitar riff builds the rhythm of the track. The lyrics are very well written, “Wasn't born to lose you, I won’t lay down and die”, reflecting the most common theme of multiple songs, break ups. A bit stereotypical, but HeadrusH manage to bring this overused theme a new edge.

The next time you can see this band is on December 27th at The Sugarmill. Unfortunately this will be their last show. Personally I love this song and it will definitely be finding it’s way into my playlist.

Theatre of Silence – Back Then

Back Then is the debut track for this local band to be featured on Spotify. Theatre of Silence originally formed from the deformation of other local bands, consisting of Nick Dawson, Chris Young, Aaron Sproson and Alex Birmingham this 4 piece band has been developing their fan base after performing in Nuneaton and Manchester, the band seems to have gone from strength to strength since appearing in the finals of Band of the Land.

Initially the theme throughout appears to reflect on a break up; “Back then seems so far away, no one to lead me astray, I’m so glad that I didn’t stay”.  While the vocals are very growled they seem to work with the theme of the track, almost as if their expressing the pain that is explained throughout the lyrics.  The eerie guitar riff introduces the track’s power beautifully, but wow that repeating riff throughout the verse is catchy. The guitar and bass throughout are faultless, especially the solo. The drums contain depth and fit really well through the track.

With being from the local area myself I have already had the pleasure of seeing this band live and they really put on a show.  I’d definitely recommend a listen and maybe a trip to one of their gigs in the future.

Keep an eye out for this band when they return to the local area in 2014, but in the mean time their last gig before taking a break to write and record their first album is on the 12th December at the Dry Bar in Manchester.
