The very air reeked of death: the pungent odor of blood as it mixed with cheap perfume she wore on her neck, all the way down to the indecent crevice of her low-cut dress. Scarlet tears dripped from the rag-doll’s fingers and fell onto the ruined carpet — attracting each other to feed the growing puddle around her feet. All that tension… the building desire to witness life as it flew right out of its mortal cage were to blame for the massacre in room sixty-four. Not her —— Sally would be forgiven. Painted eyelashes blinked to the sound of Evie’s voice: choked, tiny and coming from the open door behind her back. “You fucking tell me.” Dragging her feet across the stained carpet, she pulled on her victory smile and turned around to face her expectant audience. “Come lick it off my face. See how much like corn syrup it tastes.”
