I was supposed to get married today (2nd May) to my beloved @vix_the_star. We weren't going to let it get us down. Instead we changed out of our lockdown baggy clothes, and decided to create some wedding style photos from home. I introduce to you, our Unwedding Day photoshoot! Life in the time of plague, upheaval, and social isolation. It's hard. Many of us are feeling triggered, overwhelmed, alone, too close. In a crisis we cannot control old traumas and feelings of disempowerment intermingle with new fears and novel dangers. In turn we find ourselves triggered by one another's reactions to the chaos; anger; withdraw; distraction; or fear "Trauma impels people to both withdraw from close relationships and to seek them desperately." (Judith Herman). Negative feedback loops are quickly set into motion and are all the more difficult to halt when we are already struggling. Whatever our individual response(s) to the pandemic; courage; zeal; surrender; meltdown; cries for help; whatever; these responses are human and legitimate. You are human and legitimate. It's important we allow space for those experiences in ourselves and in others, not to invalidate by trying to control or curtail ourselves or others. I am learning this, again, but what always feels like for the first time. It is the hardest thing. I've got it wrong more times than I dare admit. We miss our friends, our family, our colleagues and community now more than ever. It is hard to allow silence when you need words or to listen when you feel that, what you supremely need, is silence. But it is only by opening a space for both (or neither) that everyone can be free to explore and construct their reactions, their meaning, alone, together. We all need space to process what is happening and, hopefully, to allow small pieces of magic to emerge amidst the ruins.
