Upali (Ref) – Buddhsit practice in mountain forests 

When Upali, one of Buddha's ten great disciples, asked Buddha's permission to enter the mountain forests to practise,  

Buddha said, “Upali, there was an elephant bathing in a large pond. The elephant was washing his body, washing his back, washing his ears, and he was very happy. Seeing this, the rabbit also entered the pond, but his small body became afraid of the water and he jumped out. You are not fit for mountain forest training, O Upali. You should practise among the people." He advised him to do so. - (Samyutta Nikaya 99) 

Upali was a barber of Buddha’s birthplace before he was ordained. Thus, he probably had a gregarious personality. It is an incredible pain for such a personality to live a solitary life deep in a mountain forest. Therefore, the Buddha advised Upali to be among the people and to practise. 

The Buddha encourages those who are fit to practise in the mountain forests to do so. The Buddha gives guidance appropriate to each person according to his or her personality. That was the Buddha’s way.

ブッダの十大弟子の一人、優波離が山林に入って修行したいとブッダに許可を求めたとき、

ブッダは「優波離よ、大きな池で象が水浴びをしていた。身体を洗い、背を洗い、耳を洗い、まことに楽しげであった。それを見て、兎もまた池に入ったが、小さな身体で水が怖くなり、飛び出してしまった。優波離よ、そなたには山林の修行は適していない。そなたは衆生の中で修行するがよい。」と、そのように助言された。― (相応部経典 99)

優波離は出家する以前、ブッダの生国の理髪師だった。したがって、彼はたぶん人懐い性格だったと思われる。そんな性格の人間が、山林で孤独な生活をするのはすごい苦痛だ。だから、ブッダは優波離には、人々のあいだにあって修行することを勧めた。

ブッダは、山林での修行がふさわしい人には、それを勧めている。ブッダは相手の性格に応じて、それぞれにふさわしい指導をされている。それがブッダのやり方だったのである。

Solitary practices in remote wilderness are not necessarily mindfulness, Zen or Buddhist practices. It is possible to practise in the hustle and bustle of a crowded city or on a crowded train, and that you can do it in whatever way suits you.

Ten Principal Disciples No. 8: Foremost in Buddhsit Precepts

Upali was one of the 10 principal disciples (Ref) of the Buddha. Among the direct disciples, he was the most knowledgeable in the precepts, and played a central role in the project of compiling the monastic discipline (Skt: vinaya) on the First Buddhist Council, after the Buddha's death.

According to early Buddhist texts, he was from a Shudra, the lowest caste in India, and was formerly the barber to the princes of the Shakya tribe (Ref2) at Kapilavastu. He was made a senior disciple of the later ordained monks of noble birth, according to the order in which they were ordained, by the Buddha, who rejected the class system.

Upali had a dwelling place in Vaishali, a commercial city with a thriving trade and commerce, called Valikarama. He once asked the Buddha for leave to withdraw in the forest and lead a life in solitude. The Buddha refused, however, and told him that such a life was not for everyone. It was assumed that he Buddha wanted Upāli to learn both meditation and Buddhist doctrine, and a life in the forest would have provided him with only the former. The texts state that the Buddha himself taught the vinaya (monastic discipline) to Upali.

During the First Council, Upali received the important role of reciting the vinaya, for which he is mostly known.

This was one of the examples of the Buddha's revolutionary teaching at the time that "there is essentially no class in human beings".

As the teachings of Buddha, his disciples and Buddhism spread throughout the world, thousands of years later, discrimination and killings continue. In order to change this reality, we need to grasp the facts and review the teachings of Buddha and many other pioneers.

Furthermore, it is important to remember that equality is not necessarily a reversal of positions.

十大弟子その八: 優波離 (うぱり、梵: ウパーリ) 〜持律第一(じりつだいいち)

ウパーリは、十大弟子（参照）の一人あり、直弟子の中でも戒律に最も精通していたことから持律第一と称せられ、釈迦入滅後の第一結集では戒律編纂事業の中心を担った。

初期の仏典によると、彼はインドのカーストで下層のシュードラの出身で、カピラ城で釈迦族（参照2）の王子たちの理髪師だったが、階級制度を否定する釈迦により、出家した順番通りに、後で出家した貴族出身の僧の先輩弟子とされた。

ウパーリは、通商貿易が盛んな商業都市、毘舎離 (びしゃり、梵: ヴァイシャーリー)にヴァーリカーラーマという住居を構えていた。彼はかつてブッダに、森に引きこもって孤独な生活を送る許可を求めた。しかし、ブッダはそれを拒否し、そのような生き方は誰にでもできるものではないと告げた。ブッダはウパーリに瞑想と仏教の教義の両方を学んでほしかったのであり、森での生活では前者しか学べなかったのである。釈迦はウパーリに自ら戒律(梵: ヴィアナ)を教えたと書かれている。

第一結集では、ウパーリは、戒律(梵: ヴィアナ)の読誦という重要な役割を担った。

「本来人間に階級などない」という当時としては革命的なブッダの教えが示された事例の一つである。

お釈迦様とその弟子たち、そして仏教の教えが世界中に広まった数千年後にも、差別や殺戮は続いています。この現実を変えるためにも、私たちは事実を把握し、お釈迦様をはじめとする多くの先駆者の教えを見直す必要があります。

さらには、平等とは必ずしも立場の逆転ではないと言うことも忘れてはならないのではないでしょうか。

Amigos, os seres vivos são aflitos pelas paixões do pensamento, e eles são purificados pela purificação do pensamento. As paixões consistem de conceitualizações. A derradeira não existência destas conceitualizações e fabricações imaginárias é a natureza intrínseca da mente.

As paixões são más compreensões. A última ausência da má compreensão é a natureza intrínseca da mente. A presunção do eu é paixão. A ausência do eu é a natureza intrínseca da mente. Por quê?

Amigos, todas as coisas são sem produção, destruição e duração, como ilusões mágicas, nuvens, e relâmpagos; todas as coisas são como sonhos, alucinações e visões irreais; todas as coisas estão como o reflexo da lua na água e como uma imagem no espelho; elas nascem das construções mentais.

Não confundam o brilho do sol com a luz de um pirilampo!
