Taylor L. Grayson: UPDATE (POKEMON)
The review for the OC submitted to me can be found under the cut; the character’s information is formatted in block quotes whereas my views are formatted normally.
This is an updated submission of this character here:

Let’s see what changes the author made, shall we?
Note about the Pokemon world I’m using: AU version of the games/anime; In a world much like our own, humans and Pokemon have finally learned to communicate with one another using a special piece of technology that is meant to be placed on the ear, like a headset. With this special type of headset, humans understand the words coming from their Pokemon’s mouths, and since its’ introduction in Orre, it has spread globally, allowing humans to carry normal conversations with their Pokemon. Many people realize that Pokemon are intelligent, although some might have been shocked to find out their Pokemon don’t mind being babied or pitied against other Pokemon for battle. Pokemon culture has been built to view evolution as a rite and battling as a privilege. Other Pokemon who have been living with humans and never experienced the wild view the life of luxury with favor, preferring it over hunting for themselves and risking the possibility of being another’s lunch (yes, Pokemon death is mentioned here).
You changed this Pokemon AU to reflect the fact that everyone can talk to Pokemon - I like it. Also, the whole headset thing is very Poke-techie. This pleases me immensely.
In this particular world, most youths travel outside their hometowns to collect badges with their Pokemon, only many return home once winter comes. Very rarely do trainers leave their own region, and even fewer become professional trainers, although the ones who do make a name for themselves are idolized. Gym leaders tend to carry for several Pokemon of their “type,” varying in levels so the challenger is met with a proper opposition; ie, a trainer with three badges will be fighting some of Misty’s higher level Pokemon compared to the trainer with no badges.
Items such as the Pokedex are reserved for students or assistants of the regional professors. Mega Evolution needs a great amount of trust to be controlled, and since the stones themselves are rare, very few people have managed to mastered Mega Evolution.
Sounds good to me! I like this version of Pokemon you’re presenting.
SoulSilver/HeartGold Male Protagonist sprite edited
Introduction Name (last, first): Grayson, Taylor Leaf (sorta a reference to the Leaf character in FireRed) Nickname(s): Scarf Lady (as she always wears her scarf) Age: 12 (beginning of the story) Gender: female Birthday: Feb 11 Birthplace: Cerulean City, Kanto
You changed her name and made her a little older! Everything else looks good so far.
Life Story:Taylor was born to an average family, a Pokemon breeder and the bicycle store owner. For the most part, her life was pretty normal. While she loves Pokemon as much as the next person, she never had much of a knack to battling. Her skill towards battling was average, yet it wasn’t as fun as it appeared on TV. She also didn’t have much confidence in herself, still, Taylor wanted to feel like she was good at something, and she eventually found her talent in storytelling. In the beginning, she merely told her closest friends scary stories, yet soon many other classmates joined in. While it was difficult to be standing in front of more than five people, she soon found joy in the numbers as she only received praise, feeding into her small ego.
That’s adorable. I can imagine her sharing spooky stories about Gastlys haunting the halls of abandoned mansions.
During this time, there was an accident that occurred between Taylor and a classmate, Maria. Maria came from a well-off family and was unfortunately spoiled. Perhaps because Maria loved being in the spotlight, or perhaps because her father told her actual ghosts don’t exist, she ended up constantly mocking Taylor and her stories. Maria managed to get several of her friends to join in, crumbling down the small stage Taylor had worked hard on managing to create for herself.
Wow Maria, fuck off.
Kids can be pretty damn mean. This is plausible and works though.
Taylor decided to get back at Maria through a prank by tricking a few low level Bug Types into going to the gym, when her class went into the same place, as Maria was afraid of Bug Types. However, she had no way to predict the thunderstorm that would momentarily cut the power in the school moments after releasing the Pokemon from the capsules they temporarily rested in. The storm ended up frightening more than just the Bug Types, and a small stampede of young Pokemon ended up charging into the gym (the rooms holding Pokemon is right across the gym). Not only was Taylor in a lot of trouble for scaring the Pokemon, and for going into the Pokemon rooms without supervision or permission, but the sheer terror Maria ended up feeling caused her to panic and break her leg. Taylor felt terrible for the accident, until Maria came back and started badmouthing her, first in front of her, then from behind. Frustrated that all her attempts to apologize were shot down, Taylor decided to stop apologized for what she did. She took the taunts, only passive aggressively responding back, even though she desperately wanted it to stop, not understanding her responding back only made Maria come back again and again. (Hopefully, I’m keeping this as even as possible, as I went to make both girls be in the wrong.)
You keeping it even as possible is working so far; Taylor shouldn’t have been passively aggressively responding, but Maria should really accept her apologies. This is working out much better than what Taylor’s backstory was originally.
When Maria transferred to Pokemon Technology Institution, Taylor wasn’t sad to see her go. The damage had been done on both sides, with the small popularity Taylor had gone (although she still had her friends supporting her), and Maria being traumatized, her fear turning into a phobia. Ironically, Maria wanted to be a professional trainer (this was a fact she rubbed into everyone’s faces, and she also bragged her parents were both professional trainers), which ended giving Taylor a bad taste in her mouth for professional trainers, which lasts for a bit, with her now biased view purposely looking for negative qualities, such as egotism, in all professional trainers. Not even her uncle, who retired from being a professional trainer, could convince her to let go of this childish bias.
This is really good! Taylor clinging to a bias works, and it makes sense that Maria’s fear of bug Pokemon developed into a phobia, because that whole thing with Taylor could definitely be considered a traumatic enough experience for a little kid.
Her uncle lives in Kalos, and she sometimes visits or get visits from him. On her tenth birthday, her uncle surprises her with an Eevee he caught, hoping she will become a trainer once she gets her license, despite Taylor expressing no interest in training, especially after the incident with Maria.
Everything looks good here too - I can see why she’d be reluctant.
Yet she still accepts the Eevee because her mother had taken a liking to him. However, she soon finds herself talking with this Eevee, finding out he has no intention of evolving and wants to prove to the world that Eevee are just as important as their evolutions. Due to finding his dream silly, she and the Eevee, who her quirky mother (who has the oh-so-ridiculous ability to give Pokemon strange or funny names) decided to name Zero, ended up not getting along. Zero was sarcastic and trickster, often giving Taylor hell by teasing her or dropping insults in the form of what sounds like compliments. Taylor is not necessarily gifted in the art of wit, so her attempts at rebuke are often met with mockery in return.
That Eevee’s dream is adorably ambitious, and it seems to suit his trickster personality. I like that just because she gets a Pokemon as a partner, that it doesn’t necessarily mean she doesn’t have problems with him, especially considering the Eevee’s personality.
When she turned twelve, she began to work at a café. She worked hard and was a decent buser (table cleaner), and she got along well with the owner and coworkers. The café owner’s husband was a Growlithe breeder, and Taylor’s own mother went to this man for advise on how to poorly Fire Types. The Growlithe breeder, named Kevin, was also a very generous guy who loved giving kids Pokemon, so after seeing Taylor and hearing a bit on how her relationship with Zero was more-or-less toxic, offered her a special Pokemon if she would run him a few errands. In each region, Pokemon like starters are given to professors by selected breeders. Professors tend to prefer pure-bred starters (both parents were of the same evolutionary line), so as to not give the assistants/students unfair advantages. There are also several different types of breeders, Kevin being a freelance breeder, a type of breeder who typically trades/donates the Pokemon to various trainers and organization (and Kevin of course checks backgrounds. But not all do).
It’s nice that the breeder does background checks and is generally responsible; I also like that he’s not just gonna give her a Pokemon for no reason and is having her run errands/work for it in order to get the Pokemon. Twelve seems a little young to work in a cafe, but since this is Pokemon, it’s not really as much of a pressing matter since we see young trainers working/battling in cafes in the games and anime.
Having interacting with the friendly Growlithe that works in the café, Taylor decides to do that, thinking maybe Zero will behave better if there’s competition. However, the task requires traveling to Saffron City. Traveling to different cities isn’t that uncommon for kids her age, especially ones who own Pokemon, so she ends up taking Zero with her (although reluctantly) by her parents’ insistence. Upon this journey, Taylor and Zero end up getting into a little bit of trouble by getting lost. After suffering through a thunderstorm (seems these thunderstorms love Taylor, huh?), Taylor and Zero end up agreeing on a temporary truce until the task is done.
All looks good here too! When you’re forced to be on a journey with someone (especially if they’re giving you problems), you kinda have to settle on some kind of agreement/truce. So what happens next?
Once they reach their destination, Taylor picks up Kevin’s order, which was a Poochyena shipped all the way from Hoenn for breeding. Upon giving Kevin his Poochyena, he then promises Taylor a Poochyena Egg, revealing this Poochyena was female and specially bred with Poison and Thunder Fang (Kevin was a breeder who prided himself in multi-generational breeding, where you breed certain offspring with other offspring in order to produce a desired move set at birth.) She eventually receives an Egg from Kevin, and upon hatching, Taylor names the Poochyena Arrow.
Awesome! I don’t see anything wrong with this either - the breeding is acceptable and I like that there’s no unnecessary angst in this character so far.
Poochyenas are so damn cute.
It is during this time that Taylor begins to play with the idea of traveling, even though she has no intention of becoming a professional trainer, she still would like to travel, as it was fun (minus the thunderstorm).
I don’t blame her! Being able to see a little bit of the world when you’re a kid (especially in the Pokemon world) is kind of like a kickstart to begin traveling.
Traveling around Kanto has proved to be difficult, as Zero has nothing he’s strong against, and Arrow has never battled a day in his life. This prompts her to try teaching them both Shadow Ball, which leads her to go to Lavender Town, where many Ghost type trainers go to catch wild Ghost types. Unfortunately, it is during this transition that she runs into Maria, who has not forgotten the past. Maria challenges Taylor to a battle, which Arrow insists is a bad idea and Zero tries to convince Taylor to accept the challenge. Pride getting the best of her, Taylor accepts, only to lose badly, prompting Maria to taunt and mock Taylor for her lack of skill. This enrages Taylor, and thus a rivalry is born (only one-sided, as Maria feels she can now put the past behind her after giving Taylor a sound beating).
This is great because Taylor’s team wouldn’t be very strong at all, so it wouldn’t make sense if she would’ve been able to beat Maria. I can see why Maria can find peace, but she sounds like a real brat if the only way she can feel better about herself is by beating Taylor in a battle. Some people are like that, though.
I’m liking that it’s a one-sided rivalry as well.
Taylor goes to the Lavender Town, purchasing the TM needed, only to find the local cemetery is closed off due to heightened ghost activity. She runs into Detective Davis and his little brother, Rusty (name change because I gave some more backstory to these two characters), who both claim to be paranormal investigators.
In this world, paranormal investigators act like researchers, using science and logic to find the truth behind the haunting. There is much skepticism towards this field, just like in the real world, where both the science field and the mystic field have their doubts.
Go on…
Yet, Taylor witnesses how Davis is able to figure out the cause of the problem, pointing to a deceased Abra that lost its trainer to unfortunate circumstances (this is a nod to the girl in Black/White/B2/W2, who had an Abra and carries the Lunar Wing). After exorcising the ghost, Taylor finds herself fascinated with the paranormal much more than before, as her ghost stories had only been that, stories.
Love it. It brings back her childhood strength of telling ghost stories, and I can definitely see why witnessing someone like a paranormal agent figure out why there’s been ghost hauntings as of late boosts her interest in the subject.
She ends up asking Davis what it takes to be a paranormal investigator, only to be disappointed that it requires a lot of time and understanding of how the paranormal work. Davis, who is only 17, asks if she wants to be an investigator, and when Taylor tells him yes, he tells her that his organization is currently hiring, but she’ll need to do a few things. 1) Get permission from her parents, 2) Leave whatever workplace she’s currently employed at, 3) Give him any credentials she might have, 4) Understand the risks and negatives the job might give her. Before she can agree, Zero reminds her of their sound defeat by Maria’s hand, which causes Taylor to hesitate. Davis tells her that they don’t battle, leaving Taylor at the crossroads. Arrow insists on dropping the whole grudge, as Maria just isn’t worth their time. Zero, however, behaves like a sore loser and wants to see her lose. Taylor asks to think about for a bit, and Davis gives her his card and tells her she has twenty-four hours to think about his offer.
Hours for musing later, and with a thunderstorm rolling in (I kinda want to make this into a running gag with Taylor), Taylor decides, that while she still hates Maria, she decides to take up Davis’ offer. Besides, she can always train on the side. She’ll show Maria up by being the best paranormal investigator there ever was.
This is awesome because:
1. She needs her parents’ permission. Even if this is the Pokemon world where kids have more options as far as early careers go, she’s still 12 and dealing with ghosts is potentially dangerous. This is very, very good.
2. He gives her a time constraint. He needs to know if he’s wasting his time or not - after all, he does have a job to do.
3. Arrow and Zero have very obvious different personalities, which reflects Taylor’s struggle on whether or not she wants to beat Maria in a battle or if it’s worth it to waste her time worrying about how to best Maria.
4. She ultimately makes her own decision, even though she’s influenced by other characters (like her Pokemon).
About You Personality:
OBSERVANT – Taylor likes to watch and see how things unfold. Her eyes will be trained on her environment, often on things happening. Even if she appears disinterested, if she continues to focus on the action, she is lying and is probably trying to understand the event before her. This is due to an inner thirst for knowledge, one not just satisfied with books but the whole world itself.
CURIOUS – Taylor was born with a never-ending thirst for knowledge. Although far from a scholar, she tends to look up everything she finds interesting. She is good at retaining much of the information she reads up on, and she tends to incorporate this knowledge into her stories to make them more engaging.
RESPONSIBLE – Taylor is typically a responsible child. Sure, when pushed enough, she’ll drop the ball, but she tends to remain reliable and hard-working. She always arrives on time to work, rarely misses an appointment, and gives her best effort in any task she’s given.
CO-DEPENDENT – She wants people to like her badly, deluding herself into acting a certain way to get attention. She will happily throw herself into any role to appease the masses, and she rather keep the peace than pursue conflict. The one time she did manage to speak up for herself, she not only got burned, but chewed up and thrown out the window (metaphorically speaking). And while she’ll tell you again and again she doesn’t regret it, deep down, she really does.
LIAR – Taylor often lied to protect herself, whether it be to save face or not to worry others. She will often wear a mask in order to hide her fears and insecurities. Due to her skill at lying, which she developed at an early age, she can mask her true intentions well, and she’s not above manipulating others to keep her fears hidden. She is very reserved over her own feelings, feeling both ashamed and scared of how people will see her for what she is. She’ll even go as far as to lie to herself
CARING – She does care for the people she interacts with, even if she doesn’t outright say it. She’s not the type to go out of her way to hurt people, nor does she get enjoyment from their suffering. She wants everyone to be smiling around her, to be genuinely happy.
LITTLE CONFIDENCE - Taylor was somewhat of an easy target to bullying and peer pressure, and she still holds a vulnerability to peer pressure. She doesn’t have much confidence in herself, even though she tries to hold up a great bravado so she doesn’t look so weak. She tries desperately to keep the walls from crumbling down. Her lack of confidence also seems to nurture a cynical side, where she fears she’ll never be good at anything, always doubting her current skill and constantly comparing herself to people better than her.
Her personality is rock solid. I honestly have no complaints - she’s very well balanced now, and it matches everything we know about her from her backstory.
Good Habit(s): Research comes first when it comes to new things. She will inform herself of the item/event prior to encountering it, and if she didn’t have the time to look into it, she will be cautious and wait, allowing the thing to reveal its secrets to her. She will also ask if someone is bothered by something, as her skill in observation allows her to notice change in body language. She is hard-working and doesn’t leave tasks unfinished. And while she might be a liar, she never promises anything she knows she can’t/won’t keep. She cleans up after herself and keeps her room fairly tidy. She also does her chores without too much complaint, and she studies like a good student.
These are good habits to have, and they reflect the rest of her personality. I’m a little ambivalent toward her being a liar while at the same time she keeps promises, but since that can be explained by her hard-working nature, I’ll let it slide.
Bad Habit(s): She doesn’t tell people everything she knows, due to her habit of lying. But if she has no one on her side, she will lose her will and crumble to pressure, which makes her seem almost unstable or even unreliable. She often tries to hide her emotions behind a mask and isn’t always truthful. She tries to please too many people at once, risking herself to crash and burn. She is also indecisive in terms of being thrown into the middle of a fight and asked to give her thoughts. She will not reply honestly and will instead switch into Damage Control Mode, trying to save face while trying to keep the peace.
Those are some great bad habits and they also reflect the flaws in her personality. You did some serious overhauling on this character and I’m really impressed.
Like(s): - telling stories, especially ghost stories - reading - time to think and ponder
-apples
-ghost stories
-the Pokemon Zangoose
-the Pokemon Dragonite
-the clear night sky
-her scarf
-potato salad
-documentaries
-cartoons (easy to enter into a pretend world where everything’s alright)
-getting positive attention
-when people are enjoying themselves around her, even if she’s not the cause of it
-listening to remixed music
-Fire Types
You put potato salad I’m laughing - for those who are confused, it was a thing from the previous review.
Good! These are way better than what you had before, and they’re more specific and Taylor-made get it to suit her as an individual.
Dislike(s): -people fighting in front of her
-her being forced to take sides
-Maria. Just Maria.
-professional trainers
-thunderstorms
-the Pokemon Beedrill
-cheeseburgers
-soap operas
-math
-rap music
-lying (knows fully well that she’s a hypocrite)
-Poison Types
Nice - they counter her likes pretty well.
Hobbies: reading, people watching, telling stories (especially ghost stories), researching Fear(s): To be caught lying. To cause a conflict among friends. Heights. Snake Pokemon. The Pokemon Trevenant. Angering others unintentionally. Loud, sudden noises. (I know three of these are kinda “No derr,” but since she is a co-dependent, I figured those fears actually mean more to her than the typical person.)
They are ‘no derr’ fears, but you’re right; because Taylor is specifically a very co-dependent person, I see nothing wrong with listing these as major fears because if any of them were to come true I can see her crumbling as a person and having some kind of breakdown if it got that bad.
Why is she afraid of Trevenant, though? Did something happen that somewhat scarred her? That’s my only gripe with this section.
Dreams and Talents Ambition/Life-long Dream: to become the best paranormal detective there ever was Occupation/Job: a student, a trainer, an assistant Abilities: In order to tell really good stories, she had to learn how to throw her voice and act. She is actually good at both of these things, although she still struggles with deep, gravely voices that her spooky monsters tend to have. However, she has a mean raspy witch voice she often uses to scare people. She’s also a very good actor.
No problems here either - she’s a good actor but still has the things she needs to practice (the gravely voice for example) and isn’t being singled out as being the super special snowflake that she was before.
Family and Friends Parent(s): Rob and Claire Grayson (Rob works at the local bike shop while Claire is a breeder) Sibling(s): none Relative(s): Uncle Keith (uncle who lives in Kalos as a professional trainer) Superior(s): the café owner (former); Davis (current)
Friend(s): Samantha, a classmate of hers who stuck up for her; Andy, another classmate of hers; Jon, a coworker who worked at the same café she worked up; her Pokemon Rival(s): Maria, a former classmate who went to PokeTech to get into the League the “effective way,” or as Taylor calls it, “the easy way.”
Everything here checks out from the information given from her backstory, so moving on!
Pokémon Information Affiliation: Pokemon Paranormal Investigation Research Division
List of owned Pokémon: Confirmed Teammates: Zero - Species: Eevee; Gender: male; Type: normal - Nature: Naughty; - Ability: Adaptability; - Specialty: Attack; Attacks: Tackle, Sand Attack, Swift, Quick Attack Taylor’s starter and best friend. He has a strong distaste for the Eeveelutions. Zero’s an asshole who loves to tease the other Pokemon, like Arrow. He pulls pranks and jokes around with everyone. He finds no qualms with mocking others for being weaker. He refuses to show his own flaws, hiding everything behind a grin. He seeks battling as if it’s his life blood, recklessly challenging others larger than himself. He has a bit of an ego, and he’s easy to offend. His dream is a very sensitive topic. He and his trainer didn’t get along in the beginning, but he’s gradually learning to respect her, even though he still disobeys her.
Arrow - Species: Poochyena; Gender: male; Type: dark
-Nature: Adamant
-Ability: Quick Feet
-Specialty: Attack; Attacks: Poison Fang, Thunder Fang, Tackle, Howl Arrow is incredibly loyal and honor bound. He likes stories about honorable warriors and began to emulate them. He behaves like a chivalrous knight, and he is eager to compete. At the same time, he feels he must keep his partners on the right path, feeling it is the right thing to do. He won’t hesitate to call something out if he feels it’s wrong. He also doesn’t believe fighting in a grudge match is honorable, as he views a truly honorable battle is when both parties are seeking to better their opponent, while a grudge match is only about tearing the other down. He will not turn a blind eye towards injustice, and he is incredibly idealistic. He is honest at heart.
I really like that you gave these Pokemon personalities - especially polar opposite ones. You can use these guys’ personalities to reflect the choices that Taylor has to make - like whether or not she wanted to pursue battling (which Zero wanted) or if she should just drop her rivalry with Maria (which Arrow wanted).
Possible choices: (These are Pokemon I’ve been thinking of Taylor eventually catching and adding to her party. The problem will be how she comes across them.)
Zangoose: possible encounter, abandoned by his trainer for not being able to keep up, has a big heart but struggles with the fact that he left behind, he specializes in speed
Lopunny: possible encounter, Hoenn region (from new Pokemon games), has a warrior’s spirit, he carries a stick like a sword and challenges trainers to fight him, stoic, he specializes in speed (WILL NOT MEGA EVOLVE)
Riolu: possible encounter, either a gift from someone or caught in Kalos (Davis’ home region), strategist, shrewd, humble, he specializes in special attack (WILL NOT MEGA EVOLVE)
Abra: possible encounter, Kanto region, knowledgeable, cowardly, good-natured, he specializes in special attack, will only evolve to Kadabra (CANNOT MEGA EVOLVE)
I don’t see anything wrong with these possible encounters, except that you need to keep in mind where/how each Pokemon can be obtained. Zangoose for example is impossible to catch in FireRed/LeafGreen (Kanto/Johto) versions and can only be acquired through trade. However, you can catch Zangoose in Ruby/Sapphire (Hoenn) near Lanette’s house. You can either stick with receiving/finding Zangoose from someone/finding him somewhere (as long as that place makes sense), or having Taylor catch him in the Hoenn region.
Riolu is another one that’s a really tough one to catch, so I would probably stick with him being given to her. Taylor doesn’t strike me as the type to deliberately wander grassy areas searching for Pokemon since she isn’t really a battling trainer. So for any Pokemon that are harder to encounter, you should probably consider them encountering her via someone giving them to her or her befriending them through other circumstances.
You might want to consider her having a ghost Pokemon or two since she’s involved with paranormal research - I’m sure she’s going to befriend at least one or two ghost types along the way. I suggest Gastly, Duskull, Litwick, or Shuppet, since those are the kinds of Pokemon I imagine would like to cause mischief around haunted places and the like.
Looks and Appearance
Body Type/Looks: Average face with no marks. Long, wavy auburn hair. Dull brown eyes. Blood Type: O Height: 4 ft 3 in Weight: 70 lbs
Outfit(s): Her outfit changes depending on the season and environment, but she always has cool colors, and she also always wears that mottled gray scarf. The typical outfits consist of Tshirts or sleeveless shirts, long slacks or jeans, and tennis shoes for summer and spring. The particular outfit she’s got in the sprite image is a sleeveless lavender top and blue loose pants. The teal bandanna on her head is another thing she typically wears outdoors. Accessories: Her mottled gray scarf that she wears all the time. This was a gift by her uncle, who still believes in her ability to speak to Pokemon. Hairstyle(s): hair often tied into a simple ponytail
Her height and weight are nice and healthy!
Thanks for providing some examples of her clothes - she dresses very comfortably, which is definitely a must for a traveling Pokemon trainer/paranormal investigator.
I’m not sure if you forgot to edit the part about her uncle ‘believing in her ability to speak to Pokemon’ since that was her old special snowflake ability, so just remember to take that out (just the part about her Pokespeak whatever - I don’t have a problem with her uncle giving her the scarf).
Thanks so much for the feedback last time. Hopefully this OC is much better. Tear her up!
This OC is an incredible improvement from what she originally was! She’s essentially a completely different person now, which is awesome!
Recap:
Some clarification on why she’s afraid of Trevenant and that bit about removing her uncle ‘believing in her ability to speak to Pokemon’, though I’m pretty sure you just forgot to remove it or something (no worries) are the only problems I have with this OC.
This is an exhibit-A example of how having someone else critique your character can go a very long way toward making said character better!
