Tolerant of dry shade the herbaceous plant Saruma henryi (upright wild ginger) is ideal for the base of a hedge. This chinese perennial has heart-shaped leaves with three-petalled flowers at the shoot tips followed by ornamental seed-heads.

A Chinese woodland herbaceous perennial that seems to survive in dry shady once it is established is Saruma henryi (upright wild ginger). The whole plant is covered with silvery hairs especially in spring, with heart-shaped leaves. The yellow, three-petalled flowers are produced at the branch tips from spring through to summer.
