;; Ultimate Sacrifice -- Uprisingmockingjay {AU}
They'd been reaping every year since before he could remember. And every year, he stood in the crowd, below that stage, dreading the day he heard his name called. He didn't have much left in his life. The last thing he wanted to do was be drafted into that sick show the Capitol calls a game. He didn't want to be seperated from his family but when they called the names every year he knew that, someday, he wouldn't have a choice.
His mother had been a past victor of the Hunger Games, but after acting out towards a peacekeeper, she was shot and killed. Dean had only been four years old and his younger brother, much younger than that. After she was killed, there was no more victor in their family and the Winchesters (namely Dean, his brother, Sam, and their father, John) had been pulled from the Victor's Village. John went to work in the mines every day and Dean normally left the District to go into the woods, which were nearby. He was skilled with knives, no matter what shape or size, but he'd once found a gun a peacekeeper had sloppily left behind. He taught himself how to use it and he was rather skilled at that too.
He liked to bring back squirrels and birds to trade for more food, to keep his brother happy. Well...as happy as they could be, he guessed.
Life in District 12 was far from a fairytale. Every day was a struggle just to survive. Especially today. It was the day of the reaping and it was now Sam's second year to have his name entered. He hadn't been called the previous year, but Dean feared that a Winchester's name would be called at the reaping this year.
"Don't worry, Sammy." His voice was comforting as he looked down at his younger brother. "It's only your second year. There's no way they'll call you. I promise, okay? And after the reaping, we'll go into the woods and I'll show you teach you how to shoot. Deal?"
The younge of the two didn't say anything, but he nodded in response.
"Time to go..." Dean said solemnly. He looked up and saw his father in the doorway, giving him a nod. "C'mon, that's go." He took his brother's hand and they left their home, seeing people walking toward the square where the reaping would be held.
It was the day of the reaping.
And it was Dean Winchester's worst nightmare.
