Uncovering Curiosities: Sci-Fi Oddity UPSTREAM COLOUR I didn’t understand 2013's Upstream Colour, but I don’t think you’re meant to understand it. You’re supposed to experience it and let it seep in.
Mainstream cinema can be great, but in a lot of cases it seems to have quite literally lost the plot- formulas and trends unfortunately can often dictate box office success in the eyes of many producers, often resulting in style over substance, taken from generically predictable and overused narrative templates. Don’t get me wrong I love …
Film I love: The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
This is a film I've been obsessed with since I was a child, my parents even used to sing me to sleep with Sally’s song, so this is very special to me. I think it may have also stemmed my love of animation in particular stop motion, as well as feeding into my aesthetic and my love of film soundtrack.
Film I hate: The Hobbit Film Series (2012-2014)
This was a big disappointment for me as I grew up loving The Lord of the Rings film series. In my opinion, 3 films was a huge mistake, it really strung out the story which came from only a small book! This meant that there were too many unnecessary action/fight scenes and additions of very pointless scenes and narrative arcs in the place of quite good parts in the book eg. when Gandalf introduces each dwarf to Beorn one by one. This is quite a humorous and calm part of the book to let us rest between the action, this rest in excitedment also works with action, illustrated perfectly in Lord of The Rings eg. Pippin’s song which is super emotional! I also thought there was too much greenscreen (which made Ian McKellen cry!) and the 48 fps didn’t work well.
Film I think no-one has seen: Upstream Colour (2013)
Even though I haven’t seen in a while, I was shown it by a friend who adores films especially really wierd ones. This is one of those, it has a very odd narrative to say the least which is not easy to understand, nevertheless it is a fascinating concept with beautiful cinematography.
