FIRST LOOK: ted lasso season 4 | source | “ted returns to richmond, taking on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women’s football team. throughout the course of the season, ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would.”
richmond, london. a ted lasso photojournal for @bag-bang. kodak gold 200 35mm shot on my nikon n55. thoughts below the cut.
also on my dw & my pf.
i shot these in january whilst staying in north greenwich over the holidays. it was my first visit to richmond and i was so fond of the borough that over lunch at l'assaggino richmond, an italian restaurant on paved court across for the ted lasso store, i genuinely began looking at available flats. upon my arrival on the district line, i walked from the underground station to richmond green, where i spent of bit of time reading, wandering, and taking pictures. i proceeded to have a pint at the prince's head pub, fictionalized in the show as the crown & anchor. one of its rooms is ted lasso themed complete with photos, art, and framed jerseys, and an afc richmond scarf hangs above the bar. next, i walked paved court, the street where ted and beard live, took a selfie in front of ted's door, and spent a small fortune at the ted lasso store before lunch. a good day!
it must be stated that i am very new to film photography and therefore fairly clumsy. i bought a point-and-shoot minolta memory maker off facebook marketplace in glasgow and played with it for a month or two before my dad gave me a nikon n55. both good cameras in their own right, but very different practically. the thing with a point-and-shoot camera is that it requires very limited thought. it's on the tin. you turn the flash on, snap a photo, and it usually comes out decent. the n55 is a proper camera, comparatively speaking, and thus requires a great deal more fiddling and knowledge. i haven't a great deal of patience for fiddling nor camera knowledge and so a lot of my photography lately has come out mediocre-to-bad. all this to say that i am entirely aware that these pictures are not particularly good, but i'm happy with them nevertheless as they are representative of my early evolution as a photographer.

fortuna, played by may calamawy, is a character who was by and large omitted from the final theatrical cut of gladiator ii despite appearing in the script. she appears in a handful of scenes as a silent member of macrinus's entourage, but is otherwise erased. this omission sparked as of yet unsubstantiated speculation that calamawy's scenes were cut as a result of her palestinian heritage and activism.
i think fortuna is quite an interesting character. i like her. two deleted scenes demonstrate that she is clever, complex, perceptive, and darky witty; her chemistry with hanno is clear, and her utility within the broader narrative is compelling. the inclusion of another woman in a narrative which centres almost exclusively on men is nice too.
i would like to see a bit more emphasis on fortuna in fan spaces. however, i recognise that she is a difficult character to work with as a result of her incredibly limited appearance in theatrical canon. thus, i have made an effort to compile all materials pertaining to her within this post. please feel free to send me anything i've missed so i can include it. i do intend to update this post as more fanworks are created. enjoy!
herein:
screencaps of every mention of fortuna, even in passing, in the script, which i got from script slug. alt text in image descriptions.
links to gifsets and screencaps of her in the film.
links to fics, art, and other fanworks created featuring fortuna.
links to clips of deleted scenes in which she appears. i got these from my blu-ray disc and uploaded them individually to my tumblr.
accessible descriptions of both clips.

deleted scene: fortuna and hanno [1]
fortuna, played by may calamawy, is an arab woman. she wears a red dress and gold jewelry. carrying a plate of food, she wanders about a party, observing as the horn of a severed rhinoceros head is scraped to create a powder.
hanno, played by paul mescal, is a white man. he wears a green tunic. he sits in a corridor just outside the party. his wrists are shackled and he visibly broods.
fortuna sees hanno and exits the party to join him in the corridor. she is relaxed. hanno is not.
fortuna: i've placed money on you. nothing big. just three sesterces. can't afford to risk more than that.
hanno, irritated: i'm flattered you risk anything at all.
fortuna: hm.
she smiles. she looks him up and down. it's a bit flirtatious.
fortuna: good luck, gladiator.
she returns to the party. hanno watches her go.
deleted scene: fortuna and hanno [2]
hanno lies on a cot in his dim cell beneath the colosseum. ravi, played by alexander karim, stands at the door of the cell.
ravi: i've a visitor.
ravi unlocks and opens the door. hanno sits up. fortuna, clad in a yellow cloak, enters and removes her hood. ravi closes and locks the door again behind her. hanno and fortuna exchange wary looks.
hanno: how could you afford the fee to get into my cell?
fortuna draws near him.
fortuna: my fee was paid by another.
hanno: macrinus.
fortuna: he thinks you lied to him.
hanno: i have not lied.
fortuna: he's frightened of nothing moreso than lies.
hanno, growing agitated: i have not lied.
fortuna, shaking her head, disbelieving: he knows you are not what you claim.
hanno: what does he believe i claim to be?
fortuna: oh, careful, barbarian. a truth shared with me might not be a truth kept. remember, i am here under orders.
hanno: then what should we talk of?
he rises and crosses the cell to put more distance between them.
fortuna: who said talk at all? would it be so bad if you took what he paid for?
her words implicate one thing but her body language another. she is not flirting. she is doing her duty.
hanno looks down. he's not interested.
fortuna: who damaged you and left you so?
hanno, threatening: careful.
fortuna draws near him again.
fortuna, bitter: i am kept just as you are. my mother became his servant. i became... whatever he'd have me be. i was fourteen.
hanno: i am sorry.
fortuna, irritated: i did not ask for your pity.
he says nothing. fortuna chuckles bitterly, shaking her head.
fortuna: sometimes you seem as noble as apollo. and sometimes you seem like a beast.
hanno: and what would you have me be?
fortuna: i confess i like the beast.
silence. neither is happy. fortuna turns to stand again near the cell door. rather than exiting, she turns to him again.
fortuna: now tell me something, so i may lie to him.
behold: my bag26a awards! i completed twenty-nine works and got a punch out. take a look at my masterlist if you fancy, or go through my tag.
