Solidago caesia

Solidago caesia Common Name: Blue-stemmed goldenrod, wreath goldenrod

A note on Identification: My first try identifying this plant using my field guide led me to believe it was  Solidago (Euthamia) graminifolia,  the lance-leaved Goldenrod. However, upon further inspection of online photos of the flowers I realized it was not a match (the Blue-stemmed goldenrod has visibly distinct petals). I highly recommend this webpage for distinguishing common goldenrods if you live in New Hampshire like I do: http://www.newhampshirewildflowers.com/goldenrod.php    

I determined that this flower is a blue-stemmed goldenrod because of: a) its straight (”wand”) form, b) its wide leaves, and c) the petals on its flowers (see photos below for flower close-ups). Like other goldenrods, Solidago caesia is part of the daisy family and is native to central and eastern North America. It can reach heights of 1.5 to 3 feet and blooms in late summer to fall.

The blue-stemmed goldenrod is good for native gardens because it does not spread as aggressively as other goldenrods. While this plant is not very palatable to humans or animals, it is very pollinator-friendly. It also tolerates deer, drought, and clay soils. I found this plant growing along the road, still in bloom in November. 

Growth preferences:

Full sun to part shade

Dry to moist conditions

Average, well-drained soil (can tolerate poor soil)

Zones 4 though 8

Verbascum thapsus

Verbascum thapsus Common names: Great mullein, common mullein, flannel plant, wooly mullein

Verbascum thapsus can be easily identified by its rosette of very fuzzy leaves. It is a biennial, and in its later stages of growth it can reach heights of 7 feet (in the form of a wooly, flowering spike)!

Native to Europe and Asia, Verbascum thapsus was introduced and naturalized in North America, widespread across the entire continent. It was likely introduced to the east coast 230 years ago! Its seeds were used by early settlers for fishing (to sting or poison fish). 

Reproduction: seeds do not travel far from the parent plant, but this plant has the adaptation of “seed banking”, where it produces an abundance of seeds that can germinate later (even years later) when the conditions are right. It can inhabit nearly any plant community as long as there is a seed source nearby, but it often forms short-lived communities in disturbed sites.

Growth preferences:

Tolerates a wide variety of climates!

Soil type is not important

Dry to medium moisture

Full sun, tolerates partial shade (this is an early-successional species that does not typically persist more than a few years after a disturbance)

Common mullein had many uses in European civilization! Its flowers were used as hair dye and its stalks were dipped in tallow to use as torches. It also had a role in folk medicine where a concoction of leaves and roots were used to treat respiratory conditions. Common mullein still has a place in modern herbalism where it is an ingredient in children's’ earache treatment and its extract was shown to have some antimicrobial and antitumor properties. (1)

Rubus hispidus

Rubus hispidus Common names: bristly blackberry, swamp dewberry, bristly dewberry

Rubus hispidus is trailing thorny/prickly vine. It has compound leaves with three leaflets. Leaves are light or dark green to purple, serrated, and about 2 inches across (or less). The trailing stems can root at the tips, so they spread easily. They are known as a bristly dewberry because of its thorns. This plant is native to northeastern North America (and Washington). It is a woodland plant but is often found in disturbed sites. I found this plant on a rocky slope alongside a road.

Life history: The bristly dewberry is a perennial, blooming in the summer with small white flowers and producing edible berries (resemble blackberries -either red or black). I have eaten the berries and while they are seedy they are pleasantly sweet and tangy.

Growth Preferences:

Moist to dry acidic soil (prefers wet habitats (like swales) and woodland edges)

Full sun to part-shade

Zones 3 through 7
