If, this week, you are planning to go to Rice University or its region, save this Thursday for a lecture: Pelin Tan, a sociologist and art historian, will be lecturing on Socially Engaged Art Practices and Urban Commons.
Pelin Tan co-directed 2084,episode I, a video on artist run culture future with Anton Vidokle (founder of e-flux).
She contributes to international magazines (Lapses, Metropolis M, MONU). Pelin Tan interviewed architects, curators, and artists from Rem Koolhaas, Sanaa, to art curators Charles Esche, Yuko Hasegawa.
She was also one of the curators of Adhocracy a curatorial project part of the first edition of the Istanbul Design Biennial (2012).

With this background [sociology and art history] and her activity deeply involved in the relationship between art, activism and urban practices, it's easy to understand why the topic of the lecture is about recent socially engaged art practices in urban space that deals with current economical and social crisis. By providing some examples of the process of the artistic practices from Athens, Honk Kong, Kyoto and other cities such issues will be discussed: The engagement methodologies, autonomy and search for alternative livelihoods and models of dissemination of surplus.
