Where are you going? I’m just going into town to hang out with my girlfriend.
What do you wear whenever you go on your bike? My stretchy pants that are comfortable for riding, and my windproof jacket.
Tell us about your bike… This is an old school 27” wheeled bike that I got from TradeMe for like 300 bucks ages ago. It’s hard to find tires for it, but it’s good. Old school as.
Why ride? It’s faster than walking, walking is so slow, and I hate walking. I hate running too.
What area of town do you mostly bike in? Between town and uni
While riding you…? I just zone out. It’s a good time to think about stuff, it’s a nice feeling.
How can Dunedin improve bike infrastructure or be more bike-friendly? More cycle ways maybe? There are a lot of lorry trucks around here that don’t make you feel very safe. I was riding on a cycle way recently and it just suddenly stopped and I had to go through all this awkward stuff to get back. Also getting more bike locks areas in the city. Sometimes when I'm in the middle of George street I've had to lock my bike to some random pole/down pipe. By the Uni there is heaps, but there's not as many in town. Then when there are some proper bike locking areas there's already heaps of bikes locked onto them.
Have you got a piece of myth-breaking wisdom or advice to get more people on their bikes in Dunedin? You don't need all the fancy gear to go riding. A pumped up tire is a happy one. Old school bikes feel nicer to ride then these new flash light professional ones. All of the road bikes I've owned have been retro bikes under $300. Biking is one of the forms of transport where you are free. Free from traffic, free from your phone and free to get places faster than walking or driving (most of the time). I break a sweat more from walking then I do from riding.
I think one of the things that put people off is that you have to ride fast and only on the road. But I've gone on so many casual rides where I cruise on the road then when it gets a bit tight with cars I just hop onto the footpath. Just riding at the same speed as someone running/jogging. Sometimes I'd rather casually ride around someone on the footpath then have a frustrated person in a car try go around me on a tight street. Ride where you feel comfortable. Don't ride where you feel unsafe or endangered.

Where are you going? I’m just on my way to uni, stopping by to get a coffee at Wolf at The Door
What do you wear whenever you go on your bike? Anything that I would usually wear. Like dresses, skirts... Anything I would wear anyway, biking doesn’t make a difference.
Tell us about your bike... My friend Thomas got it for $7 at the opshop. Did it up and then I’ve had to do some work on it myself. Cut down the seat to make it kind of fit me (laughs). There’s nothing more to it than that really!
Why ride? It’s really hard to find car parking in town and uni, and I really enjoy riding my bike. It’s super fast, I can hoon from home to uni in like 15 minutes - that’s even faster than driving anyway! You get exercise, so I get a good 45 minutes of exercise a day, just from hooning around on my bike. Plus, it’s fun!
Favourite ride? I personally really like biking around the wharves and docks at night. It’s really dark, creepy and empty, but it’s really peaceful and serene.
What area of town do you mostly bike in? Between where I live at the main intersection at Cargill's Corner in South Dunedin, and the university, and I work here at Wolf At The Door. So mostly between all those three.
What’s your favourite commuting route to take? I usually come down Princes Street, then cut down to the one-way around here (Police & Carroll Street), or down by the Hospice Shop (Jetty St) and then go down the one-way all the way.
How can Dunedin improve bike infrastructure or be more bike-friendly? A connected series of cycle lanes down the main street, from King Edward, Princes, George Streets would be really nice! North Road already has a bike lane, but imagine one arterial lane going right through connecting each end of town. More protected bike lanes in general would help especially along Princes Street here, which is very busy with bikers but hasn’t been recognised as a main cycling route weirdly enough. I’ve had some close calls with buses in particular. So, it’s about people just being more aware, more informed why we need lanes and what to do when there isn’t any. And making sure you’re really visible on your bike is really important, with lights and stuff. It’s generally pretty good, but public people need to be more aware of us.
While riding you...? Talk to myself, watch the seagulls or I just get lost in thought... It’s really nice.
Have you got a piece of myth-breaking wisdom or advice to get more people on their bikes in Dunedin? For many people, it’s easy to think like it’ll be a massive deal or effort, as if it would be easier in a car. But that’s not right! Make it part of your daily routine, and you’ll see how good it is - way faster and easier than a car both in the commute and quick parking time, less petrol costs, it feels good and wakes you up. And you do not have to wear lycra, that’s a silly myth!
