Abandoned building in North Lawrence
Linda Brown (of Brown vs. Board of Education) in front of Sumner School, and the Sumner School today.
Geneseo, Kansas
The Sumner School in Topeka, Kansas, was originally established in the late 1800's as a school for black students. In 1885, it became a white-only school, and black students were educated in a small building nearby. The school was rebuilt a total of 3 times.
The fourth (and final) building was constructed in 1935, and continued to serve as a white-only segregated school. In 1954, Linda Brown's family petitioned for her to attend Sumner, rather than Monroe Elementary, which was about 2 miles away, sparking the Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education.
Sumner closed in 1996. In 2009, it was purchased by LA-Based Southside Christian Palace Church with the intention of restoration; however, no work has been done, and the building continues to decay.
