Hi #urbies ! 🌻 Something striking hit the news today, and I’m here to echo #theeconomist: The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 was not fake, despite claims made on social media by Alex Jones, host of Infowars. The debate for major tech companies like Facebook, Apple, and Twitter is now: where to draw the line between a responsibility to remove offensive content and freedom of speech. The laws that govern public space and freedom of speech, the public forum doctrine, don’t encompass online mediums. I am really considering writing a post about this issue, what do you think? Should the ability to spread harmful content online, as another example, holocaust deniers, be able to do so in the name of the first amendment? Is there another way to address this issue besides censoring content? What about the individual’s responsibility to think for themselves and have the ability to discern ‘fake news’ from truth? Or is it not that easy? What about the problem that people are more or less privileged based upon the knowledge platforms and resources they have access to? To what do we owe them?
