“Well fuck, guys. Who dared kill someone at my party?” Evan said, glancing exasperatedly at the people around him. “Way to kill the mood, no joke intended.”
“Well, there goes the plan of keeping this party a secret from the teachers. Will people stop screaming, he’d dead. Not like he can hurt anyone anymore.” he said exasperatedly. “Obviously he wasn’t capable of hurting anyone even when he was alive.”
Ed had been spending far too much time in the water that night and therefore, it was inevitable that he was one of the first people to spot Tristan’s body hanging in midair, not too far from them. “What the hell?” he yelled as he swam back to the shore, trying to figure out what was going on. “Fuck, is that Tristan? Is he dead?” he asked he person next to him, who seemed just as shaken.
The screaming didn’t stop. The party had suddenly turned into a warzone. Students were running in every direction, not caring where they were going, their only intention was to get as far away from the lake as possible. Some rushed straight to their dorms while others went to find the Headmaster and the professors to alert them of what had happened. Murder within the school grounds wasn’t something anyone had expected during what had been a secret party to celebrate their new school year.
The news spread like wild fire that night and the next morning, the happy smiles and excitement was gone from the faces of the students, only to be replaced by terror and confusion. Quiet whispers about how some may be safer because of their blood status began to spread. Maybe it was only the muggleborns who had to be worried. Maybe the others were safe. But whatever people said to make themselves feel safer didn’t matter. Because ultimately, Hogwarts wasn’t the safe haven that it used to be anymore. The dead body of Tristan Lakewood was proof of that.
But fear is not all you get from a murder. Some find it interesting, with all the twisted secrets hidden within the meaning of such a cruel act. In particular, a small group of students was intrigued by this all. What was the meaning behind Tristan’s last words? Why do it now? Why him? Those were all questions they wouldn’t let slip so easily. But with uncovering the truth, comes uncovering other secrets, from juicy to dark, nothing was getting past them now.
High spirits, laughter, music, dancing and a whole lot of drunk students: The Black Lake Party was one most would call a tremendous success. It was well past midnight when the excitement slowly started to die down and the tired students were considering getting back to their dorms. But the hosts hadn’t planned just enjoyment for the attendees of the evening's event. Oh no. They had something very different and terrible in store for them.
The night was getting quiet but it didn’t stay that way for long. A loud piercing scream echoed through the place, quickly followed by several more as they saw a looming figure float a few feet over the surface of the black lake. The students who were swimming hurried out of the lake and onto the shore in panic as the dead body of Tristan Lakewood, a muggleborn Ravenclaw boy, hung in the air, finally visible through the mist. Fresh blood was still dripping from the wounds in his body, his lifeless eyes staring up at the sky. Suddenly, he jerked which led to the students closest scream collectively, and for a second he seemed alive again but not really. "Beware Mudbloods" he uttered in an eerie, high pitched voice before going still once more. But from that moment on, he was the only quiet thing by the lakeside. Everything else had turned absolutely chaotic.
