“This book makes me want to die. Again. The grammar is terrible. The whole storyline doesn’t make sens-”
Listening from the seat of the cream cushion on the vanity chair as you flipped a page of a book Jason had recommended you a month ago. A floral pattern pen sits comfortably in between your fingers as you annotated from the sides when something caught your multitasking attention. A dimmed lamp near your bed was the only source of light along a long candlestick, the flame started flickering. On your once well-made bed full of soft pink pillowcases and white comforter laid Jason. His broad back pressed against the mattress making him look like he’s being swallowed whole from how huge he was. The various stuffed animals that sat peacefully in their place now being squashed to death by the large mass of weight.
“Why the fuck - i can’t stand this entire book. And i finished it too”, Jason exclaimed on the bed throwing the book that he judged and threw it across your room. You laughed without looking up at him knowing he has that frown on his face.
The pen glides across the page, a little doodle of a heart you drew by the chapter number. “Then why did you read it?”, you asked him, flipping another page. Jason grew silent at your question seemingly so he was too embarrassed to say why he did.
“...booktok”
Pausing in your seat, you stop reading to look at Jason with an amused smile. “Booktok?”, questioning the leather clad man.
Still, he was quiet. Only he knew of the teasing you were going to do and he wouldn’t get out of it even if he tried. “Since when do you have tik tok? And how come you never added me?”, you raised an eyebrow at him with your arms crossed over your chest. Your glossy lips curled in a little smirk while Jason laid there motionless.
Pretending to ignore you, Jason lifted himself up a bit to grab something underneath him. A cute teddy bear wearing a floral dress with ribbons around its ears. Cute accessories for them. He looked at the stuffed animal, turning it around to examine it further, innocently he played with its ears by flopping them around like it’s a helicopter. “In my defense…Dick downloaded it for me”, he muttered softly. Jason continued to play with its ears till he laid the stuffed animal right on his chest. The action made your heart swell with how cute it was.
“But you should have added me, Jay. i could of sent funny tik toks to you”
“I'm not really on it though. Only for books or if I need entertainment”, he half admitted. You blinked at him, getting up from your seat to sit right next to him on your sunken bed.
“I never felt more betrayed. Gimme your phone please”, you demanded holding out your phone to him by opening your palm.
Jason finally looked at you with a growing smirk and a glint in his eyes. He reaches behind him to grab his personal cell phone and puts it in your soft hands. “So demanding yet so polite”, he teases you before getting comfortable in your plush bed. You playfully roll your eyes at him as you open his phone to find the tik tok app. As you opened it, you began to bite your lip trying to stop yourself from laughing but quickly failing to cause Jason to give you a questioning look. “What?”he asks, playing with the stuffed teddy bear’s dress and ribbon.
“Why is your username leath-” “it wasn’t my choice”, Jason sighed out in disappointment. The username Dick had given him for his account was stupid nonetheless. But he never changed it since he kept forgetting.
You laughed at him while making him follow your own account with a good fair amount of followers since you like to post sometimes. Some videos were of your various pets that you had including your bunny, Pancake. An holland lop bunny that had light brown color for fur and the cutest pair of ears that flopped whenever he hopped.
Speaking of pets, a loud thud is heard just outside your door making you and Jason look at the half closed door. The white painted door begins to creak slowly as a black nose appears, the nose nudges the door fully open to reveal a baby fawn standing on shaky legs as it looks at your vanity to where you sat on the bed. “Hi baby, what’s wrong?”, you coo kindly lifting yourself off the bed to bend down on your knees to the floor.
The soft coo you gave the baby fawn made it whimper till it trotted towards you in a hurry. Letting out an ‘aww’ while you watched it eagerly place itself on your lap, begging some love from you. Running a gentle hand down it’s back while you sweetly smile at the creature. “You just wanted some attention huh?’, you playfully asked the fawn pressing a small kiss on top of its tiny head. A small sound came from the fawn in response saying “yes I do!”. The bed above you shifts a bit, you slowly pull away from the fawn to look up and make eye contact with Jason who was leaning over the bed watching you and the cute creature.
“What?”, it was your turn to ask him.
Without answering, Jason stared down at you with his dark blue eyes. He studied your figure carefully, from head to toe then down at the frail animal on your lap that made small noises. You sat there uncomfortably, shifting in your spot under his intense analyzing on your body. Finally Jason spoke up a few seconds after. “Is that a new dress?”, he nodded to the baby pink dress with sheer frilly ends. Wrapped around your bare shoulders with a white cardigan with the opening having embroidered lace and a small set of shiny pearls around your neck. A gift from a close friend. Looking down at the newly bought dress from the cutest website, you nodded at Jason’s question. ‘He noticed my new dress’, you thought.
Your heart thumped at the very thought. Usually some guys wouldn’t notice till you pointed it out to them and they’ll boredly say “oh yeah it looks nice”. But never Jason, your close friend you have known for a few years. He’ll always compliment on your new outfits, your makeup, how your hair looks when you change it up a bit. It shows how sweet he was. Sometimes you secretly hoped he didn’t do that to other women, except you.
“Yeah, I saw it on that one website I really like. It was on sale too!”, you happily admitted how this specific dress was only twenty four dollars, originally fourty.
Jason smiled at your words and your expression as you beamed at him with a wide glossy smile. “Well it looks really pretty on you, doll” he complimented, rolling on his back with his head hanging off the edge, he looked at you upside down as you continued to caress the fawn. The big dark eyes looked up at you before setting its little head down entirely, seemingly already dozing off. This particular fawn you took in when you spotted it by a pond far off the city, its mother nowhere in sight. Yet it has been a few days since you hadn’t named it. Frowning a bit, you turned back to Jason who was still gazing down at you. His raven locks falling down, a bit of white peeking through the front of his head.
Shifting carefully with the fawn in your lap, you face him entirely while you loom over him a bit.
“Want to name it?”, you asked gesturing to the sleeping creature.
His blue eyes moved over to the fawn, in deep thought he was deciding on an entirely random name for such an adorable creature. “Bambi”, Jason said.
“But it’s a little overused for a deer. I mean I really like the name but give it a different name”, you frowned at him.
“You said i can name it”
“And i’m saying give it a different name”
Jason sighed.
“I'm not really good at naming things”, he admitted. His mind wandered to how he named a dog he rescued, Dog. not a well idea name for a dog. But it was good enough for him at the time.
You hummed lightly with a shrug, “just think of one. No pressure jay”. Jason gave a small smile in return till the two of you went silent. It was a comfortable silence between you two, thank god it was. One think about you is you can’t stand awkward tension, or silence for that matter. But with Jason it just felt nice. You liked to be around Jason. Scratch that, you loved to be around him.
It was those few times a month you could see him when he wasn’t out of the city or country. Sometimes you would get a message from him saying “I'm safe doll” or “almost home, I'll stop by and see you”. They made your heart skip a beat when he would say he is on his way to see you or call you ‘doll’. It makes you weak at the knees. Occasionally when he is away, he’ll send a few pictures of animals he encountered during those ‘business months’. Last month he took a photo of a capybara that went up to him for a friendly welcome. You gushed over the funny animal.
Breaking the silence with Jason continuing his conversation earlier, “oh, in the book there was this one part where the guy made the girl-”. What he had said after that made you scowl in disgust.
A few nights later, Jason had a sudden phone call on his night off of patrolling. His private cell buzzed under his pillow, lazily without cracking his eyes open he shoved a rough hand under to pull it out and hold it in front of him. His eyes squinted from the bright light. To his surprise Jason sees your caller ID.
Y/N🎀
His thumb swipe to answer the call already pressing his phone to his ear, “Y/N?”.
A small sob was heard. “Jason?”, you spoke gently.
Jason quickly shot up from his bed with the sheets falling onto his lap, his index finger wiped the corner of his eyes. “Hey. hi. What’s wrong? Are you hurt?”, he assumed the worst right now. A sense of adrenaline coursed through his veins as he leaped off his bed to bend on and grab his pants. Quickly he slid the jeans over his boxers while balancing the phone on his cheek and shoulder.
Another soft sob along a sniffle leaves your lips making Jason have a pit of anxiety in his stomach. “Can you come over….please?”, you pleaded.
Even though you couldn’t see him, he nodded urgently with a few rushed “yeah yeah, i'm on my way”. Clumsily he grabbed his shirt and jacket hanging by his desk before rushing out of his bedroom.
“Okay…do you still have the key?”, your voice sounded muffled.
“Yeah , always”, he let out a deep breath while he jiggled his keys in one hand. His thumb searched for one particular one that had a small gemstone sticker in the middle. An apartment key that you gave him whenever he needed a place to crash for the night. He really liked the gemstone you put on the key to remind him which key was yours.
Bidding your goodbyes to each other, Jason sprinted out of his own apartment and down the stairs to the lobby. And let’s just say he was lucky to not be chased down by police from how fast he went on his motorcycle.
By the time he reached your apartment, he parked his motorcycle and ran to where you lived. Using the key you gifted him Jason was impressed on how fast he opened your front door. Walking in, he sees the familiar decoration of vintage furniture, flowers in vases, a large chandelier, candles lining up and some fashion magazines. Not to mention the various and unique animals you decided to take in over the years. A white cat with a pink ribbon around her neck laid on your couch till her eyes landed on Jason, her bright blue eyes closed as she meows loudly - it was her own greeting. “Hey Marie. Where’s your mom? Huh?”Jason cooed sweetly at the cat who meowed affectionately before hopping out of the couch and to your bedroom. Following Marie, a few other furry friends greet him as well but he chooses to ignore them as you were the top priority right now. He’ll make it up to them later.
Stopping in front of your bedroom door Jason can see the dimmed light under signaling you were awake right now. Marie sat on her bottom to look up at Jason with her bright eyes. She meowed in question till she started scratching the door with a single paw. He reached up a fist to knock on the wood, “Y/n?”. Behind the door he could hear shuffling and some muffled sobs till you answered him, “come in”.
And when Jason opened your door, it gave Marie the advantage to come in and trot like it was her place. Inside your room he can light a few candles, ones from your favorite candle shop, making your room like vanilla and cupcakes. Then, he saw you. You sat on your bed with your covers pulled on top of your entire body, a copy of pride and prejudice by your feet, and your laptop sat by your waist while Gossip Girl played. “Y/n”, Jason breathed out in relief when he saw you safe and unharmed. Until his expression turned into worry when he saw the tear streaks on your pretty face.
Quickly he rushed over to you now sitting by your side, “hey, hey what happened?”. You frowned deeply with your eyes still on the tv show. Something happened.
“y/n, what happened?”Jason spoke firmly but still soft enough. Still no such answer from you. His eyes flicker to your laptop where he saw a scene with Blake Lively’s character, oh man you love this show - and he knows since you would always end up watching this or Desperate Housewives. Quickly Jason leaned forward to slam your laptop shut, cutting your comfort show off.
“Hey!”, you whined weakly.
“What happened..”, he asked once more.
You sat up from your bed, you looked down your lap to start fidgeting with your cream colored sleeves. A single tear streak fell down your cheek. Jason noticed how defeated you looked. What caught his eye from the corner of your room was the various papers of fashion sketches you made. And one single paper he managed to catch was one of a well designed dress ripped in two, down in the middle. You worked really hard to draw that dress along with color coordinating and how you would stress out on the idea of how long it should be. It was time consuming at your job. He remembered times where you would ask him which color would look beautifully on the sketch. Of course, he chose a specific color of red. To be fair, he imagined you in it.
To this conclusion, he thought of your work.
Most days you would rant to him about the most infuriating days that happened at work and he’ll listen.
“What happened at work, doll?”, he asked you, leaning in closer to you. When you heard the endearment, your stomach fluttered like always.
You thought about how terrible your day went.
People can be the worst. Even to the sweetest people. This morning, you accidentally tripped wearing your favorite pair of heels and the heel broke. While limping away and off to work where you held your designs close in one hand with your broken heel in another. At first you didn’t let that get to you. Till coffee was ‘accidentally’ spilt on your blouse and your hardworking designs were torn on purpose by one of the girls in the office. Why? Well you don’t know the answer to it.
“Just…just had a bad day”, you whispered. Another tear fell down your cheek while you examined your nails.
Jason nodded slowly, “you want to tell me what happened?”. You shook your head as a ‘no’, not feeling up to it. Maybe later you would.
Quickly Jason understood and uttered an ‘okay’ to you. He reached forward and reopened your laptop with Gossip Girl continuing on the screen. Right now, Jason knows how to cheer you up tonight. You knew how to cheer him up when he had an episode, so of course he wants to make you feel better. His large form leaned back onto your plush pillows with his arms open wide enough, inviting you.
“Come on”, he gestured to you and his arms.
Without hesitation you fold the blanket on top of you before moving closer to him. Your head laid on his chest with your arm swung around his waist. A muscular arm wraps itself around your shoulder while his hand caresses your head. His other arm is behind his head while he looks down at you on his chest, he really hopes you can’t hear how his heart is beating so fast. From where he laid, he can smell your shampoo and perfume. Lavender and vanilla. The smell drives him crazy.
No matter what you do, it drives him insane. He really likes you. He’ll struggle to admit it. Only because he’s not going with feelings. And relationships. But since he knew you years before, the feelings grew over time. You were one of the very few people who actually knew him. That helped with how he is. Someone who never gets lucky. Only rarely.
And he doesn’t ruin anything between you two at all.
The thought made Jason frown. His attention now on the tv show lay on his legs, his whole body relaxed entirely.
That was two weeks ago.
On that very night, the two of you went to the kitchen and cooked some delicious meals along with frosting a cake. And then Jason was crowded by your pets who begged for his attention and kind pets. More importantly, he stayed the night. Like a gentleman, he slept on the couch when you wished he slept next to you. You went to bed feeling better, you felt grateful for having Jason in your life. Hopefully he stays forever.
By the time you woke up, he was gone. Pillows and blankets were neatly folded with Marie on top of the pillows, purring in delight. Sure, this was normal. He’ll be gone, and you won't hear from him for months.
It was hell.
What you didn’t know was Jason didn’t want to leave. His eyes lingered on your bedroom door with his phone brightening from a message from Roy. As much as he didn’t want to, his friend also needed him. But he wanted to stay. When he’ll come back, he wants to tell you. He really does.
Two weeks in without any contact with Jason, you were sitting on your living room floor with markers, pens, pencils, papers and your laptop in front of you. On your screen you listened to audiobooks of your favorite book, lost in your imagination while your hand drew carefully on the paper. Marie sat by your feet while playing with her ribbon around her neck. A sudden knock made you jump in surprise. Who would come in this early in the morning? Definitely not your neighbors since they are your age and always come out of their apartment in the afternoon. Setting down your pencil, you stood up to walk over to the front door. You looked through the peephole and to your surprise, it was Jason - standing there awkwardly while he rocked back and forth on his heels.
Confused but giddy, you looked at your mirror near the door to check your appearance. Using your fingers to fix your hair and lipstick, you quickly opened the door to reveal Jason in his leather jacket with a simple black shirt along bright blue jeans instead of his regular sweats and red hoodie. His hair was slicked back on the sides leaving the front of his hair hanging on his forehead. Just how he looked, your eyes widened on how hot he is not noticing his arm behind his back. Of course Jason has always been attractive. He can wear the weirdest outfit combinations and he’ll still look handsome.
Particularly you were ogling him from where you stood, Jason was no better.
What you wore was a black turtleneck with a gray skirt, a silver necklace sat around your neck while you wore shiny pearls for earrings. To top it off, a pretty bow behind your head. He knows you can dress.
“Hi”, you greeted him with a shy smile.
“Hi”, Jason said back.
Immediately Jason pulled out a huge bouquet of your favorite flowers wrapped in a satin ribbon. Comically your eyes widened at them upon seeing the flowers sitting beautifully in Jason's hand, you were in awe at the fact that only did he get you flowers - he got your favorite ones and he remembered. As you were staring at them with an awestruck look, Jason chuckled while pushing the bouquet towards you. “Here”, he said, passing them on to you.
Quickly you held them in your hands making small contact with Jason’s scarred fingers. No words can describe exactly when the man you’re in love with brought you flowers. Sure it may be a small gesture but it means a lot especially coming from Jason. “Thank you-”, taking a whiff of the flowers “they’re beautiful Jason”, you spoke flashing the taller man a wide grin.
“Anytime doll”
“Come on in”, you welcome him in by widening your door just a bit more.
As Jason entered, he felt a small brush against his leg. Looking down he saw the spoiled Marie who meows loudly for his attention. With a gentle smile he bent down a little to rub between her ears as he cooed at the cat. Her purrs were loud and content from receiving the most delightful head rubs from the man who always hangs out with her mother. Taking a few strides over to your kitchen, you pulled out a white vase and quickly filled it up with water. Not far you can hear Jason greeting the rest of your babies before going back to Maria. It had to be the cutest thing you heard all day. Just from how gentle he was to your pets is a big thing for you.
Years ago when you two were a bit younger, you would spot Jason petting some strays and feeding them whatever he could get his hands on. Animals do go to a person who radiates a kind soul. And that example is Jason, in a way.
“You’re finally back”, you started placing the beautiful flowers in the vase. Turning around you held them firmly in your hands as you carefully walked back to the living room.
On the couch sat Jason with Marie perched on his lap with her tail up whipping him affectionately on the face and neck. Your own cat was probably in love with Jason more than you are. “Yeah, got done pretty early. Also - “ he gently grabbed the cat from her stomach and placed her right next to him on the couch. “- i want to say, i'm sorry for leaving the last time I was here”, he timidly smiled stroking Marie’s fur.
You shrugged, you were more used to him staying than leaving. What mattered was that he always came back.
Setting down the vase on your white carved coffee table before shifting some items to make it nicer. “It’s alright, Jay. I never minded anyways. Just as long you come back”, you whispered the last sentence. Jason smiled hearing you quietly admit that you always want him to come back. Carefully walk around the coffee table to take a seat next to Jason at the end of the couch while swinging your legs to sit comfortably on the fabric. With a small distance between you two, the scent of tobacco and spicy cinnamon cologne caught your attention. “New cologne?”, you asked, playing with the fabric around your sleeves. Raising an eyebrow in confusion, Jason knitted his eyebrows together already grabbing the front of his shirt up to his nose taking his own whiff.
“Oh..yeah. I…bought it yesterday. It smells good”, he drops his shirt as new wrinkles form.
“It does smell good”, you smiled.
“Can i ask you something?”Jason inquired. Tilting your head to the side, you blinked at him with a muttered ‘sure.’
Through his nose he took a deep breath, a new lightweight crawled its way over to his lap again only to see the same white cat beginning for more of his attention. Plopping down slowly, Marie’s paws dug in his jeans already making ‘biscuits’ while letting out a rhythm of purrs. Whatever he was going to say to you right now, he didn’t want it to ruin your friendship. The last thing he wanted to do was lose you. Someone who has been in his life longer.
His blue eyes laid on the soft white fur as his fingers twirl around them, the ribbon collar around her neck was clear to everyone she was your baby. After all, he did give Marie to you.
You watched Jason avoid eye contact with you, already busy with your cat who bathed in his soft affections. “What is it?”, you quietly asked, shifting in your seat feeling the tension.
“...do you really like me being here? With you?”His voice was shy yet hopeful. Your shoulders slump down while letting out a sigh through your nose in relief. A small bashful grin on your pretty lips from Jason who was questioning his presence in your comfort. “I do. I like it when you’re here Jason”, you spoke watching his expressions while fidgeting with your shirt. His expressions went from worry to ease once he heard your answer.
Yet he didn’t look you in the eye.
“Good…i like being here with you…”, he admitted now brushing the white fur between his fingertips. Your heart skipped a beat, your stomach was filled to the brim with butterflies. It felt good to hear him say that to you. Talking about these kinds of things was hard for Jason and you never wanted to pressure him from doing so.
Letting your gaze down to your skirt, finding little white furs stuck to the fabric already. Using your index and thumb to pluck them off one by one. There was a silence between you two. The same one that sat comfortably and not painfully awkward. Between you two, you basked in each other’s company with each other.
After a few seconds, Jason looked up at you to see how preoccupied you were from patiently taking Marie’s fur off your gray skirt. He watched as you focused in on them whilst Jason took in your features and mainly your lips. You wore the same lipgloss as always. His blue eyes traced your nose, eyebrows, and eyes then from the corner of his eye he saw the various papers, markers and your laptop playing. Color and ink filled paper along different fabrics taped to the side. The design you drew was incredible. Now, he may not be the most fashionable man out there but he has ideas about what was good or not.
It’s your dream for you to one day have your designs up in the big names. And damn right he’s your number one supporter. He always has been. Sometimes when you two would go out and spend a ‘friendly’ quality time together, you’ll show up with an outfit from a website you bought or one you made on a boring evening.
Times those outfits he’ll stare at you with lovestruck eyes. You’re just so pretty. Speaking of those ‘friendly’ quality time together, it was time to finally ask you.
Taking his eyes away from your work he looked over at you who was plucking the last noticeable long white fur. “Do you wanna go out?”, he forwardly asked. Jason watched you pause with your head snapping up to meet his eyes.
“What?”
“I said, do you want to go out”
“...like right now?”
“If you want”
“Okay”, you agreed, getting up from the couch to grab your coat until he said that made you entirely froze.
“I meant as a date..”
Your eyelashes fluttered at him as you furiously blinked at him thinking you misheard him. “Wait, really?”, you quickly asked him. Jason smiles, flashing his white pearls at you. He let out a small chuckle while he shrugged his broad shoulders.
“Yes really. So?”, he awaited your answer with a twinkle in his eyes.
Now, you've been on several previous dates and most of them ended in two ways. Angry men who say the most crucial things to you or they never last long - ending up as a small unserious fling. With the man in front of you, asking if you want to go on a date, oh your heart couldn’t take it. You stuttered a small yes, before they turned into various ‘yes’ and an excited gleam in your eyes. Deep inside Jason was patting himself on the back for finally asking you out on a date and not backing out.
A new sense of confidence waved over him, his smile turned into a sweet smile. “Alright doll. Better start getting ready so we can go”, he teases you, shifting his eyes from your room and back over to you. Realizing that you currently wore clothes from work, you gasped already jumping off the couch to run to your bedroom. The rush of stressing on what to wear and what makeup look you’ll do since this is a first date with the man you're in love with. “Give me twenty to thirty minutes!”, you yelled out to Jason slamming your door shut.
Jason laughed at how fast you suddenly ran to your room. He looked back down at Marie on his lap who looked confused and frightened from the sudden noise. A finger rubbed on her forehead to ease her. In his head, he thought of how excited you looked at the idea of you two going on a date. On top of his head he started planning the day for today and where he’ll take you.
Then a sudden nudge by his foot surprised him. Looming over to the floor he saw the same fawn from weeks ago that grew just a bit, staring at him with those dark twinkling eyes. It tilted its head almost asking “who are you?”.
Jason curled his lip up on one side as he and the fawn had a staring contest. All of a sudden, he remembered when you asked him to name the little creature. He had yet to name it.
“How do you feel about being called buck?”, a small bleat in response.
