YouTube Preps 96 Channels With Original Content (Multichannel News) Google's YouTube, looking to attract more advertising with professionally produced content, plans to launch some 96 new video channels in the next year featuring original content from a range of entertainment, sports, and news partners. CNET: Amateur hour may not exactly be over at YouTube, but it looks like the time has finally come for the sleeping kitties and exploding pop bottles to make some room for professionally produced content from the likes of Madonna, The Onion, TED Conferences, and others. TechCrunch: There are some big names on the list. But there are still a lot of questions: Will this content really rival the premium production values seen on cable? Will the shows be exclusive to YouTube? And how exactly is YouTube going to tweak the site's user experience as it looks to shift users from funny cat videos toward these shows (which advertisers will be able to more effectively monetize)? NYT: The channels will receive programming from a long list of media companies, including big television production companies like FremantleMedia, as well as small startups like Maker Studios, YouTube said. GigaOM / NewTeeVee: An onslaught of exclusive content from a parade of A-list stars including Madonna, Rainn Wilson, Tony Hawk, Ashton Kutcher, Shaq, and others will be coming to YouTube in the next few months as the site is positioning itself as the next big cable channel, with the exception that you won't need a cable subscription to watch it. AllThingsD: The channels aren't all premised around the idea of celebrities and Hollywood per se -- just the idea that someone with some idea of how to make good stuff will start making stuff specifically for the site. paidContent: Here's the YouTube partner rundown in alphabetical order. AdAge / Digital: Revision3 CEO Jim Louderback: "As the sixth-biggest network on YouTube (per comScore), here at Revision3, we're excited to have you traditional media folks on board. However, let me give you some words of advice. Despite your official anointment, it's not like high school, but with better drugs. YouTube is different. So let me be the unofficial orientation coordinator and give you five key tips to help you be successful with your new venture."

Occupy Protestor Assaults WNYW Reporter (TVSpy) A disgruntled Occupy Wall Street protestor confronted WNYW's John Huddy Friday morning as he was covering the latest developments in Zuccotti Park, and the situation quickly turned ugly. Yahoo! News / The Cutline: White House Press Secretary Jay Carney held his daily briefing with reporters Thursday, the first since returning from President Barack Obama's swing through California and Colorado. Reporters traveling with the president aboard Air Force One were criticized Wednesday for not asking Carney about the violence that erupted during the Occupy Oakland protests earlier in the week, even though the president and the White House press corps made a stop in the Bay area. On Thursday, however, the press did raise questions about the Oakland standoff between protestors and police. Yahoo! News / The Cutline: Most Web searches for Occupy Wall Street are originating in the hippie-loving states of Vermont and Oregon, according to a topical analysis of search trends by search giant (and Yahoo! competitor) Google.

CW Strikes Hulu Deal To Score More Revenue For Programs (AdAge / MediaWorks) The CW wants viewers to watch its shows -- so much that it's increasingly adding ways to watch them in venues other than The CW. B&C: Two weeks after making a billion-dollar deal to stream programming from past seasons on Netflix, The CW has signed a deal to put current episodes on Hulu and Hulu Plus. TechCrunch: Hulu announced a five-year licensing agreement with The CW, which is owned by CBS and Warner Bros., for the rights to stream in-season episodes of The CW's programming on Hulu Plus' subscription service and the platform's free, ad-supported service. paidContent: Hulu Plus will be the only subscription service with in-season episodes; the five most recent shows will be available the day after broadcast. Ad-supported Hulu.com will have the five most recent shows eight days after air. But it's not a full exclusive -- the deal still allows for access via authentication by cable operators, and The CW will stream episodes on its own cwtv.com before they show up on Hulu.com. AllThingsD: It's important to note upfront that Hulu is paying cash for the programming. While the video site -- a joint venture between Disney, News Corp., Comcast, and Providence Equity -- has discussed bringing in another equity partner, that's not happening with this particular deal.
