Dancing With My Father - a Memorial Day Reflection
It is Memorial Day in the US and as we pay homage to our heroes, I recall my father's own selfless sacrifices as a war veteran, a Philippine Scout under the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) in mid 40s.
When we were young , Papa told us how he fought alongside American Soldiers then led by Gen. Douglas McArthur against Japanese Forces during World War II. At 21 he served to defend the country. The ugly scars on his legs served as a reminder of that gruesome era: how they spent days and nights pursuing the enemies and surviving encounters. in the jungle, sometimes running through murky waters and being exposed to all kinds of infestation.
Perhaps you have seen the movie Pearl Harbor and scores of other WWII movies. Needless for me to elaborate, the many horrific stories our veterans and heroes has undergone, many did not survive to enjoy the freedom and peace we have today. Let us honor these great men and women of our history.
I cant forget the day when I danced with my father during the best Christmas Eve dinner we ever had. It was a celebration of life, celebration of freedom to enjoy life.
Papa I salute you - your stories will forever echo in my mind.
May our generation and the future generation always uphold peace.
